Tires for street with some off-road meat? 3rd gen

Ok, I have a "new" '96 T4R 2wd SR5 and I drive about 40 miles each way to work on highway and road. I enjoy riding off-road although obviously I don't have 4x4 capabilities. I have the stock tires on my truck now and want to upgrade the tires and rims in the immediate future. What are some long lasting tires that would be good for my situation? I like big tires, but I can't afford to lift her just yet.

I've been pondering a few tires with the same mindset.

I've narrowed them down to...
Goodyear Duratrac (my overall choice, bearing in mind overall price)
Yokohama Geolander ATs (2nd Choice)
Hankook ATm RF10 (3rd Choice)
Nitto Terra Grappler (My buddy has them on an FJ that is mostly on the road, but loves them when on a trail)
BFG AT TAs (had them on my Tundra Rock Warrior and loved everything but traction on pavement)

well I am happy with my terra grapplers both on and off-road. So far I have put 30k miles on them and figure on at least another 30k.

Been really happy with the Wranger SilentArmors here. Pretty quiet ride on the road, no complaints off road - though we're not doing rock crawling - but have done a few trails that I'd consider relatively rough for a stock vehicle.

I've got a stock 99 ltd runner and after doing some research I just put some A/T Hankook's on. These tires are starting to really get attention as they've got some good meaty tread to them but will work fine for on and off road. Here's a pic I just took after putting them on my rig. I bought them through Discount Tire Co. (they broke my center caps and are ordering in new ones - if you were wondering why it was missing)

My 00' came from the factory with Michelin LTX M/S P265/70 R16.
Best tires I've ever owned. First set lasted 71K.

Thanks to all for your info. I would LOVE a meaty looking tire, but ultimately, I need to drive 40 miles each way to work, plus driving around on my off days. I have a buddy at my station with a 98 4R with BFG AT's and he likes them. I am strongly contemplating the Nitto Terra Grapplers.

If anyone using their 4R for daily highway/road driving and still enjoy's their tires off road (mind you, I'm not doing heavy off-roading anyway), throw your preferences out there. Thank you all.

GYSA are a good,quiet tire in wet & on highway, not bad offroad either. so are revos some say they dont like the way BFG ATs handle in the rain. ive heard nittos are good also, just my 2c

If you are considering the BFG ATs then you have to consider the Duratracs too.

However I think something more mild would be better for you. A tire along the lines of the TerraGrappler, Revo, or Silent Armor.

I love my Hankook RF10's! I do probably 95% on road driving, but want the meaty look as well. These tires have been great thus far. Check the link in my sig for more info/pics!

hey guys, sorry to tag onto your thread, but i need some help...i think i'm going to go for the hankook dynapro atm rf10's from discount tire direct...the question i have is, do i need to get the TPMS rebuild kits? my tires are in ok shape, just low on tread...i thought the tpms stems are attached to the wheel, not the tires...this sounds kind of like a sham, anyone know whats included? they don't offer any pics or very good details on the kits...
also, do you guys get the replacement certificates? seems pricey...but then insurance always is

If you are considering the BFG ATs then you have to consider the Duratracs too.

I'd rate the Duratracs far above teh BFG AT's for someone mostly driving on the road. You're just about guaranteed to like the Duratrac better if you do a little mudding, and it's not unusual for people to complain about the holding power of the BFG when driving on the street in the rain. While it doesn't mean much, the Duratrac is awsome looking and changes a T4R into something much meaner looking, yet it's got very nice street manners.

Oh definitely. I've had them for a year now and really like them.

I just meant that if he was going as aggressive as the KO then he should consider the Duratrac too because they are pretty much the two most aggressive AT tires.

I have the DT's They're great tires. I've only done a fraction of the off roading I thought i was going to do. They have performed flawlessly.

I can tell you that they're great in the snow and provide decent grip in the wet.

Going forward.. I dont see much changing in my off road use.. so when it comes to changing them out. I will be looking for something with a little less meat.. As they get older they start to sing too.. something else i wasn't prepared for.
