Tires on 17" rims vs 20" rims

This is probably a total newb question but I always wondered why everyone changes out their 20" rims for 17"/16" rims?

I have the limited 20" rims and love them, I think they look great and want to keep them. I do some gravel road, dirt road and a lot of winter driving and wanted some good all terrain all season tires. Is this possible with 20" rims? or do I need 17"/16" rims?

Also what are some performance differences between rim sizes?

I've had some eye on these tires, anyone try them? If not can anyone recommend a good tire?

17"/16" allows your truck to float. More air in the tires. Larger rims also give you the gangster discount on your auto insurance. BFG's and Nitto Terras have great All Terrains so either one would work well on any size rim. No personal experience with Coopers.

A bigger sidewall is going to give you a better ride off-road and more of a cushion over bigger bumps. This also reduces the chance of popping the bead. It'll also let you air down the tires if you ever needed to do so. A lot of All-Terrain tires do not come in a 20" size.

If all you were looking for were snow tires for the winter I'm sure you can get that in a 20" size. Anything more suited for off-road use really doesn't come in a 20" size. A quick search on tirerack.com will show that there's no real A/T tire for a 20"

So to answer your question, yes you would need a 16" or 17" rim to fit beefier AT tires. Especially if you wanted 285. Otherwise, I'd just go with a set of snow tires for the winter:

I have a 2015 Limited and swapped out for TRD 17x7 with 265's. The ride is much softer.

There are a few guys that are hard core off roader and running 20's so you can definitely keep your stock rims.

Basically, the narrow width of the Limited rim (7") means a 275 section is not recommended. If you wanted more meat, go to a smaller rim. Maybe a 255 or 265 will work, but if you are considering taking this thing off road, I would go to a 17x7 or 17x8. Much more tire options. There's just too many limitations in keeping the 20" rims

Search! JK, most shops will not mount the 275 (20inch rim) since it is not approved for a 7" wide rim, that drives a lot of people away from the stock rims since there are literally like two tire options for the LE. So most buy aftermarket rims, or like me sell the 20's and get the 17's (tons of options and a nice ride) plus they can be picked up cheap. The 20" wheel is easier to dent/ scratch offroad and most on this site go offroad.

As a side note 16" wheels don't fit our trucks due to brake calipers.

I don't think most people here would give you a hard time about search on this topic, it doesn't come up often and you are trying to understand, not argue about why tire companies don't approve the sizes etc which is normally attached to this topic.

Cause 20" wheels with less than 37" tires are for women and ghetto goblins.

Far more size options and much more reasonably priced tires for 17" wheels. 17" wheels clear the brakes, so anything larger is non-functional.
