Tires, Set of 4 or 5...

I'm ready to replace my stock tires to an AT tires.

However, I am undecided on set of 4 or 5 (spare included).

Can I use stock spare tire which has different thread pattern safely? It's an additional $300 expense :(.

My thinking is that my previous cars has temporary compact spare tires. In Owner's Manual, it was stated not to exceed certain speed while using compact spare tire.

What's your opinion?

Thanks

You don't mention if you are staying with the same size tires, even if you are not you won’t hurt anything by driving 50miles on the stock size even if you have 285/70's. For what it’s worth I have 285/70 Mud terrains and have yet (it’s on my list) to replace the factory spare.

Handling would be worse but I expect that if you put the spare on you would drive to compensate for that (slow down etc)

Ideally, get a matching spare if you can, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t but I would certainly prefer to having a matching spare then to not. It’s hard to swallow as the reality it is will spend its life under the truck unused (unless you rotate it in)

Get a full size spare and wheel. This way you can put all 5 into rotation and get the most out of them and your money.

A somewhat related (and possibly stupid) question: I have the 17" trail rims (stock tire size) but my spare is the 20" from the limited, would there be any concerns with this? I'm assuming there isn't.

I am sticking with stock size (265/70/17) except it's LT C rated instead of P.

Thanks for your input.
then why is this even a question? Keep your stock spare. Only reason I could see spending the money for a matching is if you are out on the trails for an extended period. youd want a tire to provide like performance

I figured as much, but after reading 1engineer's post I just wanted to make sure.

"Also notice I put a spare with the same rim and TPMS under the back to make it apples to apples. If you have to either have a shop dismount and remount a tire every rotation or you purchase an additional rim with TPMS up front you are losing money." -1engineer

Personal Techstream programming. I tried to make it as fair as possible to those five tire rotation guys.

I thought our ECU can only read 4 TPMS, so a 5 wheels rotation will include TPMS reprogramming? *don't like....*

Correct, but not a concern to me if and when I use my spare tire without TPMS. I will just ignore the yellow warning light :)

I use winter tires on separate set of wheels without TPMS for 4-5 months. As soon I park my truck close to the garage, the yellow warning light goes away.
