Tires??

I just bought my first 4runner. Its a 2001 and im looking to put on some all terrain tires that work and look good but will also keep the smooth driving on the road. Any suggestions. I have 265/70/16 right now I believe! Thanks

You can go up to a ~32" tire or 265/75/16.

I would suggest the BFG KO, Goodyear Duratrac, Bridgestone Revo, or Nitto TerraGrappler to start with.
 
265-75-16 Wrangler Goodyear Duratracs...best lookin tire on a 4runner you will find. Its inbetween a mud tire and an all-terrain tire and still drives very smoothley on the road. I just bought a set and love them.
 
It all depends on what type of off-roading you're going to do. If you're not going to do a lot, look at the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs, IMHO this is the closest you're going to get to a HT(highway thread) on an AT. In short look for a thread pattern that's not too agressive or blocky and do not have lots of voids/free space between the blocks. lots of siping helps for wet and winter driving. A continious thread down the center helps too with what you are looking for.

But its definitely a trade off between on street smoothness/performance and off road performance. I don't think there's an AT that will ever be as smooth on the road as a well built HT tire. You will definitely be able to tell the diff.

Why are these so cheap just cause they are old tires with just new tread? And how long do they last usually? You like them?

I'm thinking of getting cheap tires for winter and then buy new nice ones before summer next year.

Not trying to jack thread but this could help him out too if he's wanting to go cheap. Thanks.

The tire carcass is a used carcass, but it has been carefully inspected and repaired if necessary. The tread is new. They are cheap, because the manufacturing process is quicker and easier.

I have not used them myself, but I will be buying them the next time I need tires. I've not once heard of anything unusual happening with them, and the few people that do use them love them. I also like supporting a small business like Treadwright...they care about what they do, and they do it well!

I would be scared to air them down as the tread can separate from the carcass when doing it, plus sidewall strength would be extremely marginal on these unless you get the matching carcass of say an MTR or similar.

It even says in the FAQ section on that site that airing them down voids any warranty at all.

FWIW, I just bought a set of Hankook Dynapro A/Ts for $99/ea. I have read great reviews on them in the snow/ice. Mine went on a new to me 93' 4runner. I have also had great results with the Yokohama Geolander AT/S as well, but liked the extra siping on the Hankook for a DD in Colorado.

Discount Tire matched the price in store. But after tax. mount, balance, etc it was $540 out the door for all four with the warranty and lifetime balance/rotation.

Hi There, Did you end up going with the 265-75-16 Wrangler Goodyear Duratracs at a C or E load rating? What's your opinion about either? Thanks much. Daniel
 
Here is another plug for the Hankook Danapro ATM's I got mine in 10 ply and they went on my tacoma I have just over 20 thousand miles on them. They still easily have 2/3 or even a litttle more tred left in them. They are amazing in the snow and such, good in all but the deepest mud, nice and quite on the road, and even though they have a fairly agresive tread compared to other AT's they only knocked off about a mile per gall on compaed to teh crappy street slicks ( Donlops) that came on the truck new.... 10 ply is a bit more then i need for my truck but i love having them for when I haul and tow. they handle very well in the rain and standing water on the road never hydroplaned..... BFG AT's are WAY over rated, its 20 year old technology that is over price and sells because of the name. great tire but there is a lot better stuff out there, the ATM is one of them.
