TIS Techstream

Just wondering if any 4th geners out there are set up to use this from home.

It seems popular in the 5th gen subforum (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/121604-toyota-tis-techstream.html) but I haven't heard of anyone with a 4th gen doing it aside from going to the dealership.

Just curious if it's really worth it on our years (maybe the 5th gen would have more changeable settings??) or am I better off going to the dealership when/if I want changes made

Interesting...the only thing holding me back right now is I don't have a laptop with a cd drive.

I just ordered a techstream with software off ebay for $27 - I'll be testing it when it arrives in a week. Anyone else have any more info? The main things I want to do are to disable the beep and make it so hitting the unlock button once unlocks all doors. If it works, I'll post a how-to.

Oops, completely forgot to reply here...

...or pop the cd in a desktop, upload to Dropbox, go to laptop, download from Dropbox?

Can you elaborate on what dropbox is? I have a desktop, would I be able to download the info from the cd onto a thumb drive then transfer to my notebook?? Sorry computer isn't my first language :D

Please update once you've played around with it, I curious to hear what you think..

Thanks for the help

I bought mine off someone in the 5th Gen thread. The tool isn't Gen specific.
I wanted it to get live data, "putz" and most of all for future troubleshooting. I already have a TPMS tool. The 4th Gen has fewer things to customize but I did use it to customize the door relock timing. I'll explore other customs.

$27? Holy crap where the hell did you get one for that cheap?

Ah, that's why they're using one of those Chinese cables with a bootleg copy of the old software. Well it seems to work okay, GL trying to get any support on the "tool," but then again for less than $30, its probably worth more to get a new one.

From a DIY, "I wanna customize settings and pull some codes" aspect its a great tool. I'd like to see someone play with it on a much deeper level though. i.e. testing a vehicle, utilizing things like DataList (customizing said Data List), Bi-directional controls, ect. I have a feeling its not going to be able to perform those functions properly or accurately.

Not knocking the cable, for 95% of owners its a great cheap alternative to going to the Dealer. But I always look at my diagnostic equipment from a technician standpoint, even if its just for home.

Exactly. One of the 95% here. I see it partly as a toy, partly a tool. It's paid for itself at less than the cost of one customization trip to the stealership.
I am unable to, nor would I want to, play with any ECU programming. However, you are able to customize datalists, capture all the live data and record data streams. I'm particularly interested in the fuel injection timings, ST & LT fuel trims and fuel economies. Not sure how it would be inaccurate.
It's something to play with and hopefully never have to use for troubleshooting given the decent reliability of Toyota.

Correct me if i'm wrong Blackworks but I don't even think the dealership version allows you to adjust AFR or timing maps. Usually those are set from the factory and if one requires adjustment, then they would just replace the entire ECU. That stuff is PFM and I don't think your average technician knows enough about it to be able to make adjustments, plus it would require a dyno.

That's true, you can look at a lot of the data in the vehicle, but you won't be able to change much of the fuel mapping. That's factory programmed and Toyota doesn't want you playing with that from a end user stand point. That doesn't mean you can't use the data as a diagnostic tool, just that you can't adjust fuel trim to your liking like you would say brightness on your dash.

The reason I mentioned accuracy is because some of the older versions of TIS had some bugs and issues that gave false information. I remember reading in the patch notes when I updated the scantool of small bugs and quirks that could confuse techs.

It was an analogy, I don't think you can make the dash any brighter than it comes from the factory. (At least I haven't found that setting in TIS, if it exists.)

Sorry for the confusion and disappointment. :(

I got excited there for a sec...Oh well I guess I'll have to settle for an LED replacement

Did you find a way to change any of the settings? I'd like to make the beep louder for the remote so I can find it among hundreds of others in noisy parking lots but there doesn't seem to be an option to change anything.
