Another thing I noticed is that I thought I should be able to do things like program a new key or tire pressure monitor to work with the car but there's no option in Techstream to do anything like that either. Did I get a version with reduced features for dumb dealers or something? How is it possible that my version, which is supposed to be the newest, doesn't have any useful features?

That's not a safe assumption.
I detailed in the 5th Gen thread the pains I went through to get up and running on an XP virtual machine. The hardest part was to get the program/computer to recognize the cable on the USB port.
As for a user's manual, I just fumbled and played around the menus and some of the help functions. I don't have any formal Toy technical training but I used it in conjunction with the service manual to follow the diagnostic charts.
Practiced throwing a code by driving with the gas cap loose. Then was able to find the diagnostic code that was set and clear it.
Like I said, I just played with it.
Are you able to see live ECM data?

It didn't connect to the vehicle at first since my 4Runner is a 2004 model that doesn't have CAN but after I chose the correct vehicle it started working.

Mine is also a non-CAN '04 and the program auto detects it.
I didn't get a "Tiskey" file. Does your CD have a file called MainMenu.exe? I have attached the text file with the key and instructions I followed. I definitely backed up and replaced the MainMenu file. Maybe try a fresh install from scratch using those.

I have to do the last step of jumpering some OBD pins for a Zero Point calibration after everytime I use the cable because it first tries to use the CAN profile. It's a quick step so no big deal though.

Well I had some success, sort of. I kept bugging the ebay seller I got the package from until they sent me a new driver. It originally had a Mangoose driver on the CD but that didn't let me get to anything I could change, just look at the data like RPM, voltage, temp, etc. when the engine was running. The new driver is called the XHorse MVCI driver. Now I can get to items that can be changed but I haven't actually been able to change anything yet. I wanted to make the remote dongle beeper louder when the vehicle is locked or unlocked. I can get to the settings but it says Vol is already set to max. so I tried turning it down. That didn't make any difference so I guess it only has one set volume. I also wanted to turn on DRL and it says that is already on so I must not have the turn signal relay that's needed to make it work.
The version from the file sharing site came with the MainMenu.exe file to make it work but it still was worthless even when that was used. The CD version from ebay came with Tiskey and the Mangoose driver instead. I didn't have a problem with Zero Point calibration but it disables VSC when it starts and re-enables it when it's finished so the lights blink on and off the whole time the VCI is in use. I recommend using the CD version since you don't have to reset anything when it's done.

So what can you change with the it on the 4th gen? Does all the same stuff apply form the 5gen?

On the first post they have a list of what can be done on a 5th gen is it the same for the 4th? 5th Gen list of features that can be changed

Ah, that's why they're using one of those Chinese cables with a bootleg copy of the old software. Well it seems to work okay, GL trying to get any support on the "tool," but then again for less than $30, its probably worth more to get a new one.

I have one, and am certain there are more than a few things the Techstream software can do that the OBD connector adapter will not support.

From programming Subaru ECUs, I know that the "K" and "L" lines need to be active, and so far, have yet to see a report of one of the Chinese parts having that. Suppose I could get brave and see if the OBD widget I used on my WRX works with the 4Runner and Techstream.

So, good luck re-flashing your pre-2008 skid control module to enable the VSC OFF pin as the 2008-2009 have, even though the wiring is all the same. Who knows where you can get the bin file for the reflash anyway.

It did let me turn off the DRL and tweak the door unlock settings. Not really gotten too deep into the software yet.
