The basic idea I have for this build is to end up with what a 4th gen TRD pro would have been like if they made one. A trail edition would have been nice but I sort of just went what I found just in case I didn't like it I could do a quick sale and get a 5th gen but the long drive back quickly cemented the 4th gen build and here we are. It's not all going to be stock but there will be personal touches here and there. The work will show how many parts are retrofitable from the 5th gen and what parts won't be. I'll update the thread as I go along. Accumulation of parts will continue as I find deals and hard to find pieces here and there. I picked up a lot of ideas from other forum members and hopefully some of what I do will help contribute to the forum as well.

01/24/18 - Introduction

This will be my third 4Runner build and the first time venturing away from the 3rd gen. I still have my 3rd gen though and I'm still debating if I will end up selling her after I get the 4th gen up and running for daily use. I had my first 3rd gen back in 2002, a 99 V6 2wd. I ended up selling her back in 2007 and getting back into one after I graduated in 2010. That's the 99 4cyl 2wd manual I have now. After selling my RS4 to get my house, I started to look into other cars I can get and was shopping between a BRZ, GT350, and a CTS-V wagon but at the same time I started to think how I can pare down the fleet a bit. It made less sense for me to have a manual SUV and an automatic sedan. I also wanted something more capable of towing but didn't need the utility of a pickup truck. I decided that I should just do a complete change around so went looking into getting a 4th or a 5th gen. The 4th gen took quite a while to grow on me and so did the 5th gen, although I still like how it looks straight from the factory. A year ago, I was able to drive my friend's brand new 2016 limited a few times and then decided to try a 4th gen V8 4wd. I noted how similar the two were interior and driving characteristic wise. More so with the early 5th gen interior than the newer ones but still felt like it needed a V8 and clearly Toyota was never going to do that now that it's been out for 7+ years. I was on and off shopping for a 4th gen since July. I actually only pulled the trigger last month (December 2017) on a sight unseen 2007 V8 4wd I saw on an auction lot. I just flew out this past week and drove her back over the course of the week. Now I just have to do a few small things to get her ready for inspection and registration after my work week is done.

Not quite a pile but with unknown maintenance I have a semi decent project ahead of me.

That one sticker was quite the annoyance. I didn’t get to take it off til I got down to Richmond and bought a razor from Walmart to get it off.

Here she is after getting her back home next to my 3rd gen.

I didn’t get to meet the sales guy not the finance paperwork guy after ubering from the airport. It was almost an hour ride there and I got to see the way I had to go back to leave the area.

First stop was to get some local grub.

Second thing was airing up the tires before leaving Philly. All the tires were under 28 psi. I didn’t realize that the spare was included in the TPMS warning. But I was at peace of mind at least for the tires I was rolling on for the next day and a half. I also leaned that this would be my second vehicle that averages 17-18 gallons per fuel stop. The first being my RX7.



Then to plot the road home.

The first night, I didn’t leave til 18:00 which made me sit in traffic for like an hour. I made a few stops along the way for an aux cable from Best Buy, water and snacks from a grocery store, and a few other stops (in Baltimore and Washington DC) for local beers from Whole Foods.

I also like these pit stops that I see in the New England states where all the food and fuel is in one place like an island. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the toll fees. Good thing I brought a few 20s with me. I didn’t make it to my hotel til midnight and being up since like 5:30 am that morning, I pretty much passed out after checking in.

1/19/18 - Second Day

I gotta say after the first night of driving, I have to appreciate Toyota for many of the creature comforts they did to the 4th gen. I used to get backaches all the time driving my first 4Runner back and forth for undergrad and my current one probably is more of the same except I stopped taking her on road trips.

Here is my first stop at Mission BBQ in Roanoke, VA after leaving Richmond.

I wanted to try out some local BBQ since things are done differently out here than they are in Texas.

A short pit stop at the Virginia / Tennessee border. I needed a nap since the BBQ was making me a bit drowsy.

Here I am making another short stop at the border of North Carolina. Three states in less than a few hours. Wouldn't even make it out of Texas in a few hours depending on where you start.

A nice night sky was coming down as I was nearing my stop for the weekend in Asheville, NC.

1/20/18 - Kenwood DDX917WS / Smokers Kit / TRD Pro Shift Knob

I anticipated my stops along the way and had thing shipped to Amazon lockers in Richmond, VA and Asheville, VA, as well as my friend's house for a few items from ebay and Walmart.

Barely had the truck for 48 hours and already starting some simple mods.

This might be useful for others on the forum but Kenwood makes a 200 mm Toyota specific head unit overseas for the Australian / Asian market. The model I bought is the DDX917WS and it is a capacitive touchscreen instead of resistive touch. The unit also has built in hand gestures, which I haven't explored yet. I could have saved a couple hundred just getting the DDX717WBT, which has air mirroring and bluetooth but does not have the CarPlay and Android Auto. I wanted this feature specifically. I know that they released some new units at CES but since I already had bought the truck back in December, I've been wanting to get this unit so couldn't wait til May to get the 2018 model. Most of the research I did on the unit came from FT86Club.

I actually had this on my luggage, just in case I wanted to install it in the parking lot in Richmond. Good thing I decided to wait.

I didn't have all my detailing supplies with me so most of the console will have to be taken apart again to do a deep cleaning once I got her back.

Also installed the smoker's kit I ordered off eBay. I found this almost last minute on a thread while at work. I figured if I couldn't install it then my friend could use it on his rig, since he also has an 08'. The only thing is that he's not into modding it like I am.

Nice thing is the unit already comes wired for Toyota so its just pretty much plug and play. Minus the steering harness, which I'll have to find an alternate way. I'll make a new post once I figure this part out.

Unit fits almost perfect. First time I actually misaligned it a bit. I might have to fiddle a bit more because it sits more towards the right than towards the left. I suspect it has to do with it being made for the RHD market instead of the LHD. Unfortunately they don't make a LHD version of this unit. Although I haven't had much issue reaching towards the right hand side to adjust the volume, which won't be an issue when using the remote or steering wheel controls.

If it we're for the Kenwood logo, it'd look pretty stock. I really considered the AppRadio 4 by Pioneer but at the end I spent the extra monies because I wanted it to fill in the whole space. I wanted the most seemless OEM look that I could get without it looking too aftermarket.

The only thing about the 2017 unit, is that CarPlay / Android Auto is wired USB connection and not wireless. A small concession, so if any one plans on it, know that the 2018 models are being advertised as wireless Android Auto ready and potentially a firmware upgrade away from being wireless CarPlay ready.

Only a graphic equalizer, not parametric, but it does the job pretty well.

All buttoned up. It pretty much goes with the theme I was going for, which how it could have come from the factory and being 2018, CarPlay / Android Auto are pretty big. I still have to install the GPS antenna (it helps the phone navigation software), front / rear cameras, and steering wheel adaptor.

I ordered the TRD Pro shift knob that they use on the Tundra / 4Runner.

It looks almost okay except it sits too low. I'll have to decide if I want to trim it or not to make it fit properly because right now I can only shift it as low as 4, it doesn't make it to 3 or below. Although I suspect this won't be as much of an issue in Houston since I only needed it for a small downhill section in Asheville.

1/21 - 1/22: Rest of the Way Home

Here is the view from my friend's place in Asheville. It was quite a nice climb up the ridge with the V8, including a few nice hair pin turns and short portion where it was just a single lane going both ways.

Took a load off on Sunday and went brewery hopping.

Then packed the hatch for the road home on Monday.

I would have probably spent just as much shipping the truck but would not have had as much fun or as much local brew to bring back to home.

The last time she'll be at my friend's place. In retrospect, I should have taken some pics of the twin 4Runners next to each other.

Stopped at a local place in Montgomery, AL for lunch after picking my friend up at the Atlanta airport to help me drive home without stopping.

Our last food stop was in New Orleans where I met up with a former roomate that was attending graduate school at LSU.

Made it back home by 3 AM. I was pretty tired but at least my friend drove between Baton Rouge and Beaumont to allow me some much needed sleep. I drove the last 90 minutes to his place on the west side of Houston then another 45 minutes to get back to my place up north. Here she is next to my other rig.

That's it for updates. I have on order a fumoto valve, new air filters, and some brake parts. I'm still figuring out what fluids I want for the diffs and transfer case / transmission. As far as suspension goes, I think Radflo / Icon if I don't decide to do the Boss Toytec setup. After my work week, I'll probably hit the power steering system and then fix the broken license plate bolts. I'm guessing which ever dealer took in the trade snapped off the license plate bolts. I couldn't bolt on the temp tags so I had to tape it to the rear window.

Haha congrats on your purchase. It was a fun road trip. I think it worked out fine only because I stretched over a 5 day period instead of trying to do it over 2 days.

I sold it back in March 2017 to a guy that lives out in Atascadero, CA. I still miss that car. That's why I've been shopping for a GT350 / CTS-V. Recently I also looked briefly at the RC-F but I really want at least one manual sports car. The no brainer choice would really be a BRZ with the lower cost of maintenance and Toyotabaru reliability.

I love the new receiver. Do you have a JBL System? Do you know if it works with JBL enabled cars?

I'm thinking others can probably be better at answering this but if its anything like the 3rd gen, the harness that plugs into the JBL amp will be the same universal toyota harness. I can't 100% assure this for the 4th gen though. Mine was not a JBL system.

Didn’t mean for the lack of updates. Just been working and traveling out of town the past month. I did get the safety inspection and registration done though. The rig is officially in my name.

I also just ordered the SAIP bypass on Thursday from Rutech and was surprised that it came in so quickly.

I know I could have gone with the relay kit but I liked the plug and play along with how oem it looks in the bay. Next up will be the rusted license plate bolt removal so I can actually mount my plates and then full fluid exchange.

Failed attempt to use this to fix the bolts the dealer in PA broke when they took in the trade.

I ended up ghetto rigging it nuts and bolts for now so I can start driving her around. I plan on getting Dewalt one step tap and drill instead. Will try those when I get back from my trip.

I did install the Rutech bypass module a few weeks back just for peace of mind. Haven’t had limp mode yet and don’t plan to live through it.

Also got these in from a tacoworld member. Will install them on my weathertech mats whenever I get them in.

It’s been a while because I’ve been spending money on my other hobbies, large aquarium and gaming pc. Kind of boring but all I did was swap my TE37s from the 3rd gen over. The tires that came on the truck were getting too dry to handle the wet weather driving I do in the 4Runner. The other day I was trying to enter my neighborhood and ended up skidding to a stop instead of making the turn into the entrance, scary stuff. I should have known better too.

Got plans for the lift but that won’t be til 2019. I still got the Volant intake and amsoil fluids on the todo list though. That’ll happen probably next month since I got work and San Diego Comic Con coming up the latter half of this month.
