Is there a benefit for a body lift if I don't intend to cram 35s or rock crawl?
It will help with 33" tires on full compression some (I have some rubbing under full compression and flex with my 33") but other than that, there's no real need for a Body Lift besides creating more clearance for larger tires.

So for example, I have the toytec ultimate 3" with 285's. Offroad the rear rubs when its stuffed, would I benefit from say a .5" BL?A body lift can be beneficial depending on your wheel/tire combo and suspension setup. Example being is that you can put a good lift on with good flex and travel and want that particular size tire to achieve your look / style, but the wheel rubs only on up travel. A modest BL can be your solution.
If you don't need it, I wouldn't do it.
