Too many tire choices.....

My rims are on the way and now to order some tires. I know im going with 285/70/17 but what tire. K02 Ridge grappler road venture cooler on and on and on. My rig is mostly for fun. But needs to ride the highway to get there. I'm not a rock crawler but need it to get me where I'm going over many surfaces. I have stock size open county now and they work pretty good but I think I want more aggressive.
What are you running? Pros and cons. Would you buy them again? I'm gonna pull the trigger in the next couple of days but would love some feedback from the group.

I kind of wish I had gotten ridge grapplers because... they look awesome.

I'm running General Grabber AT3Ws and my only real complaint is that they pick up small rocks like crazy. I park down a gravel alley, and have 5 rocks in each tire at all times.

Personally, looks aside the KO2 is tried and true.... just saying :shrug:

i had Nitto Crosstek on mine when I bought, with plenty of tread left. I removed them. too squirmy on the road, difficult to hold a straight line on highway.
But I do no offroading except on my 2 dual-sport motorcycles.
no lift, no need to look brawny.

i reco you read the top ranked ones in that size on Tirerack.com as a starter, unless you're just going for looks.

Mine is my daily driver. It probably spends 85% on road and 15% offroad. I went with the goodyear wrangler Duratrac's. They have decent road manners and have an aggressive tread. They were also a little cheaper than many of the alternatives like the Ko2s. So far I like them. I have had them on for about 1,500 miles. They are a little louder than my Grantreks they replaced but they ride smooth and have much better wet traction.

Ive been on ridge grapplers for a little over year, in all conditions and abuses

285/75/17 load C... I have no reason to ever want a different tire.



My father runs the STT maxx on his 02 suburban 2500 .. also a great tire.

On this vehicle, I was running some Bridgestone all-season/highway tires.

While it fits the mold of what your first point, I will say that I have experience with the Cooper AT3s on a previous vehicle as well. Not apples to oranges, sure. I find the benefits of the off-road handling and characteristics of the RG, to be worth the tradeoff of slightly more road noise compared to the AT3s.

But, the other tire manufacturers eliminated themselves before I even purchased the tire as the RG was the only hybrid AT/MT in 275/65/18 that was available with a load rating that wasn't a LT rated tire. May not be important to others, but I believed the stiffer sidewalls wouldn't quite fit the ride characteristics I was looking for.

I got that in a Toyo open country a/t 2(E rated). And I can't decide if it's a bad size and rim combo, or if they are just the wrong tire.

I thought about going with 285s, but I didn't want to move to an LT rated sidewall and add further rotational weight. For my uses, I didn't see a ton of advantages with the 285s over the 275s.

It's possible. I used the chalk method and the highest I can go up front and have a full contact patch is 36-38psi.

I notice the taller sidewalls when turning, but that's inevitable, but the truck feels good on the road. Doesn't wander or give me any reason to doubt how it'll handle.

I really like FS Destination AT's. Great wet and snow traction, long lasting, I got almost 60K out of last set. That said they just don't look aggressive enough for an AT.
This time around I looked hard the Venture AT as well as the Falken AT3. Main criteria is wet and snow traction. Also want quiet and good looks.
The Falken Wildpeak AT3 has the snow flake rating which I really like. Put a set on for $560 OTD and I'm very happy after 5K miles. They're a tad louder than Destination AT but also look way cooler. Can't wait to try them in snow this winter.
My driving is mostly highway, 95% on road.

Yeah, after that long on a dirt road I'd expect to see more dust/dirt on the shoulders of the tire. That looks like it doesn't quite have a full contact patch. What pressure are you running on the front and rear?

Michelin Defender LTX

I just replaced Michelins with new Michelins. I got almost 100,000 mi out of first set. I drive Interstate highway 90 mi to work each way and will off road (nothing serious) in my daily driver.
185,000 on my 2006 Limited V8. completely stock but thinking of some upgrades with suspension.
