Too much L/R sway on my 5th gen TE

Hey all,

I have noticed that my 2010 4runner has what I believe to be too much left and right sway when going over bumps/potholes on anything above 15mph.... Im riding on stock rims with stock Dun(f)lops...

Anything I can do to make it less "roll-y"? Maybe the wheels suck, or maybe the suspension isnt to my liking?

Any help would be appreciated...

FWIW, my 4th gen SE didnt have that kind of sway on it, even at stock.

Thanks!

Yes, this is normal for the TE without KDSS. I have the same issue. Pretty sucky on Toyota's part that you have to buy a rig with an expensive option like KDSS (which requires NAV in my area) in order for it to drive right. Or buy a Limited with XREAS. I think if they had just put beefier sway bars and/or stiffer springs, it would drive a lot better.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Is there anything you all recommend I do after-market wise?

No KDSS on mine....

Without the KDSS you basically have a SR5 suspension. Same spring part numbers between the 2 and probably the same shocks and sway bars. The big thick KDSS sway bars level it out and firms it up.There have been a few complaints about the SR5 suspension being on the soft side.

The Dunflops don't help in the matter either as the set I had ,for a week and a half ,felt squishy and bouncy.

The fix......new firmer suspension and better tires.

Maybe monotube shocks? Bilsteins or KYB or anything like that should help...but these shocks will firm up your ride.

Basically, I need to firm up my ride, and get some real tires...

Got it.

I have an idea about tires, but can someone please recommend an aftermarket suspension? Im clueless!

what about manual disco's?

Manual Disco's?? Is'nt that the Mexican dancer in "Sa****ay Night Fever":wow:

Seriously ....Who makes them.I'd be interested! I hav'nt seen anybody making them to fit a 4runner.As far as I know ,Disco's disconnect the sway bars loosening up the ride and providing more articulation when offroad. His complaint is it's too loose now. Disconnecting the sway bars with stock soft suspension would be all over the road.

From cheapest to most expensive-results are subjective

Spacers-Several make them-If on top of the spring instead of on top of the CO it will firm up the ride a little.

Bilsteins 5100's-They have different height settings-FJ OEM springs are firmer and are always for sale on the FJ forums.

Toytec Ultimates-Tried and true using Bilsteins and their own springs-Never heard any complaints

OW....Overland Warehouse 2.0 or 2.5 -New for the 5Ths but probably best bang for your buck. They look like excellent quality and have had great results on 4th Gens.

Icon Vehicle Dynamics-Over 10k miles on mine and still love them- The best IMO but I'm a little biased!

I'm sure there are a few more.

I have the non-KDSS and mine rides fine on highways and down terrible offroad paths. I haven't driven a KDSS on the same paths and I don't know if I want to.

There's no way to add KDSS aftermarket is there?

Haven't seen them either, haven't really looked either. My point is if you had a beefier sway bar and were worried about losing articulation off-road, you could run disco's for off-roading, not on-road.

KDSS is new, right? So what did all the Toyota people do before KDSS?

Just go with a decent suspension package. You could always get a beefier sway Bar for on road, but like others have mentioned it will make the off road ride harsher. I was looking for discos on my 08' Tacoma but never found any. You would have to disconnect both sides at the spindle and keep the bars somehow up out of the way. Too high, tires will hit the sway bar when turning, too low and the cv boots will get ripped to shreds with suspension moving up and down.

I've been in the same boat your in since I bought my Tacoma in 2008. Best on road handling and awesome off road travel is just a little hard to accomplish. That's actually the main reason I spent the extra $$$ and went with the KDSS. Save me the headache of what your dealing with.

In the tacoma I went with an icon front coilover and just tossed out the sway bar. The ride was great both on an off road, just had to relearn on road driving habits having no sway bar.
