OK so I am building my 98 into an expo style rig. I have the camping goodies sorted. What tools do you take to cover most trail repairs? I don't plan on changing head gaskets on the trail...but don't want to run into a lack of preparedness either.

*metric wrenches,
*hammer
*various pliers
*multimeter
*various screwdrivers
*big crescent wrench
*breaker bar
* various electrical supplies (black tape, connectors, wire, fuses, strippers,ect)
*35mm socket
*WD-40
*duct tape
* bailing wire


I'm sure that I'm forgetting a few things here and there but that's the bulk of my kit.

There's a post somewhere about what Brad carries. It's one of the best lists I've seen. Will be using it for my 4Runner when I get ready to pack my drawers.

The last two items on this are the most important. You can fix almost anything with duct tape and baling wire!

Cool! I am thinking about getting one of the kits from Sears and adding some specialty tools to it. When I go out I will add my Snap On cordless stuff. Can't leave it in there as I work on cars for a living lol

To add to the aforementioned list; aluminum foil, JB weld, plastic baggies, a can or two of tuna (hunger is always lurking lol) a tarp, and a cheap pillow with the plastic liner still on, if you have to lay under the truck in the elements for a couple hours, might as well have something to prop the head on lol

I am planning on a rooftop tent so hopefully won't need the tarp setup. I have 4 MRE's and my survival gear in my go bag that is always in my truck along with my first aid kit. Keep the suggestions coming!

The tarp is to lay underneath the truck, so you don't have to lay in whatever you're stuck in while you wrench lol. Helps keep unforeseeable fluid spills off the ground also. Can be used for endless things, really. Wind break, privacy wall, additional rain protection.... oh and nobody mentioned 550 cord. That stuff is priceless in so many situations.

I can't fit the roughly $30k worth of tools and equipment in my toolbox at work in my runner. I want to bring enough to be prepared but not so much that I won't use all of it.

I did search but from what I searched "repair kit" and "necessary tools" the awesome post above didn't come up. I am a noob here but not a noob to wheeling or forums. Thanks for the info!

I was just giving you a friendly nudge, man. Normally I am not a "search" nazi, but I also normally avoid posting in FAQ type threads.

The majority of that list you can take with a grain of salt as you may find some items more/less useful than I do. However, that list of tools is golden. I've worked on these particular vehicles extensively, and I can tell you from experience that if you can't fix it with that list of tools, it probably needs to be towed.

On longer trips I carry my "demolition bag" that I take with me to the "U-Pull-It" type junk yards. With the additions in that bag, I could strip one of these things to the frame. If there was one tool I would move from the "demo bag" to the "all the time" kit, it would be a med size tie rod puller for swapping LBJ's and TRE's.

Not trying to come off as a dick either. If it was a Kia I would be set lol! 3 sockets and a hammer will darn near take it all apart!

Would like to add 2 lower ball joints and as stated a pair of front axles. On my old crawler I had a spare rear axle shaft. However it was a floating shaft and didn't require much to change. From the other threads the tre's might be a good thing to have as well.
