torque converter question

well I got the old motor out of the '97 and found this huge metal donut attached to the flywheel that weighs a ton and leaks transmission fluid all over my floor. are these things supposed to leak transmission fluid and before I re-install it does the fluid need to be replaced?
this project is soooo above my pay grade!

Dude, you should have done some more reading first! You are supposed to disconnect the torque converter prior to removing the trans or motor.

Get a factory service manual. They are available online for free to download. I am not sure where you go from here buddy. But you need to carefully reinstall the torque converter back into the trans. You can mess up the planetary gears behind the tc if done improperly.

Separate the tc from the motor first. When i replaced my trans with a used unit i believe they removed the tc and drained the fluid before it left their shop. Took all of 16 quarts to fill up the trans, so i doubt you NEED to refill before you reinstall bc the fluid will be pumped into the tc.

You can put the TC back into the trans. My rule of thumb is if the TC is removed then a new seal and bushing should go back in first hand. Hopefully you didn't hurt anything pulling it with the engine.

ugh....well I crammed this old man body into the engine bay and with a piece of wire located the keyways, marked the location on the torque converter and it slid right back into place! so I guess I better hunt down a new seal.....where's the bushing?

The bushing is inside and it's the OD of the TC. It supports the TC on the outside diameter. You may be OK. Shine a light in the oil pump inlet and see if you can see the bushing.

I defiantly go the extra mile preventing the TC from coming out of any trans when I remove a engine.
