I recently got my first 4 Runner after 6 Jeep Cherokees, and I really like it. But have a problem that is new to me. It is a 2000 limited 4x4 with 170k miles, and has a torque convertor that started whining about 3 months ago, and is getting gradually worse. A fluid change and can of trans. conditioner helped, but it didn't last long. It only whines when pulling, and stops as soon as the clutch locks about 45 mph. Sound also tapers off as the trans speed catches up with the engine speed. No sound at all when idling in park or neutral. The sound reminds me of a power steering pump that is low on fluid. Otherwise the tranny works perfect. I am a car nut and have owned over 60 vehicles of all makes and models in the last 40 plus years, and never had this problem. Anyone else had this problem?? Any suggestions??
