Totally confused about 4th gen front calipers: 13WG or 13WH

Hi all,

Had a seized right front caliper on my 2006 SR5 V6 4WD 4runner. I went to Napa in a pinch and they asked me: 16" or 17". The SR5 came with 17" wheels, so I selected that option. I'm currently running 5th gen 17" wheels.

Installed the new caliper and pads, no problem. Now that I'm looking online, I see that there is reference to a casting number. I've been searching and am not clear about which one I *should* have.

The caliper that came off was cast 13WG. I've read this casting number is for "smaller" calipers.

The caliper that I put on was 13WH. I've read this casting number is for "larger" calipers.

Absolutely nothing seemed out of the ordinary when I put the new caliper on. It bolted up fine, pads fit fine, everything seemed ok.

Did I get the wrong caliper? I suppose someone could have swapped on the *wrong* one at some point in the past, but I don't know (bought the truck from a family member who can't recall).

I'm not concerned about clearance issues with the wheels (already bolted them back up and no issues), but I am concerned about the fit of the other brake parts to the new caliper.

How can I confirm I will be ok with this caliper?

Thanks!

Nevermind, believe I got it figured out.

I need to swap out for the 13WG. The pads are hanging about 1/4" beyond the rotor with the 13WH.

I believe the 13WG is for the 12.5" rotor (as indicated by Napa). The 13WH is for the 13.3" rotor.

For those ordering from Napa - beware - go by the casting number and not the question they will ask if you have 16 or 17" wheels.

Now hoping they will take a return on an installed product...

Your calipers should have a number and letter cast into them, either 13WH or 13WG.

If it's 13WH, you have the larger 338mm rotors/caliper already and should get the 60151 rotors

If it's 13WG, you have the smaller 319mm rotors/calipers and should get the 35322 rotors

This is from somewhere here on the forum I believe. My son just asked me about this for his 4Runner. He has the 17" wheels like I do, with the 4.7 V8 and they should be the larger rotors

Instead of returning the calipers and swapping to the smaller ones, put the larger rotors on to match the larger calipers. It's a common 4th gen upgrade, which obviously gives you more braking surface area than the smaller set up.
It has worked well for me.
I also have not had good luck with the lower priced aftermarket calipers.
Now, I'm running the OEM 5th gen calipers and so far they have been trouble free for 10k miles. Hopefully they stay that way.
Edit: I also think I read somewhere around 2016 and later, the 5th gen system changed, so they might not work.
I ordered 2012 calipers + rotors and they work fine.

Got this sorted today. Went back to Napa and got both 13WG calipers and replaced them. All good.

Wanted to show my having the wrong caliper is a bad thing. I did not notice the pad overhang when I went and put these together yesterday. In the 1/4 mile I drove, the rotor had already put a slight groove in the pad.

The stamped on designation plus rotor diameter info is the best bet. Sad that the parts store didn't realize this. Another reason to take an old pad with you to verify. Rockauto lists it pretty well under their caliper options for our vehicles.

Yea, I caught it when I went to the Napa website. They have it detailed there pretty well too. Live and learn. Thanks!

Ypu missed a chance to swap the rotors to a bigger 13.3 type since you already have the bigger calipers and enjoy better stopping power.

mine came with the smaller rotors and calipers. i changed to the bigger wh calipers and 13.3mm rotors

Understood, and I thought about going through with the upgrade, but I was under the gun to get the job finished this weekend. The truck has been handed over to my son, so I'm just trying to keep it road-worthy at this point, not looking at too many upgrades. I've got bigger concerns with managing the rust (noticed one of the fuel tank straps is disintegrated while I was under there - next project!) and some routine maintenance right now, that getting it back together was the priority.

I bought something at NAPA once that was about $40, don't remember what. I got home and looked at my credit card receipt and the charge was $90 something. Then I noticed the part number was 90 something, exactly matching the amount charged. They were happy to refund the difference back to the card. Never underestimate what a parts clerk is capable of. :(
