Tow cap

I guess here is my spending breakdown for towing:

Reese receiver hitch ( to replace oem V6 hitch ) - $175

Prodigy P3 Brake controller and harness: $150

Blue Ox Sway Pro weight distribution & Sway control : $600

2 5/16" - 1.25" ball: $15

I won't argue that a WDH is a fantastic investment and is always a good choice. But if your not wanting to shell out that extra cash, I think as long as you stay below the tow cap you will be ok if you have towed before. If your new to towing its an excellent investment and will take a lot of the risk out of the equation if your towing near capacity. (At least at these tiny tow caps)
That being said I won't be using one.

Having towed the same trailer (RV 21', 3600#) with my 4Runner it was ok stability wise using no WDH/Sway control. You definitely felt the strong winds you could feel it tracking the ruts back and forth on the highway. Passing vehicles made were so-so feeling.

With the WDH/Sway control it was much smoother. The cross winds were not as noticeable and the same roads felt much better. Passing trucks were much less notable too.

I don't find this chassis the best towing chassis. But my only other comparisons are a freight liner dump truck pulling bull dozers and front end loaders and my F350 Super Duty Diesel pulling a 5th wheel.

For me the extra $600 is worth the control and safety for my family. I know many people are opposed but I think everyone has to evaluate the risk for themselves.

We watched a car get pushed off the road on I-95 last year when a large travel trailer bring pulled by a pickup got hit in the crosswinds. The had to chance to do anything. It was just pushed into the median. Luckily no one was hurt.

Good points here. I should point out for others that I'm simply towing a low profile flat open car hauler with a gutted racecar. Compared to pulling a giant windsail like a camper, its not affected as much by wind. I would recommend WDH for something like what your towing.

Very true. I have much more side & frontal area. I agree with a flat bed trailer it might not be as important, unless you are in the plains states with those winds.. I try to avoid towing anything thru Kansas, Oklahoma, etc..

Tow Cap

I just recently pulled a 21 foot travel trailer with my 06 4.7l equipped Runner. Weight was a little over 5000 lbs. Plenty of power to spare and controllable with a W/D hitch and sway control.
Was running on Cruise pulling substantial hills and still maintaining 65 MPH, but had to slow by about 10 MPH when the S curves began showing up just because I wasn't confident about slinging 2 1/2 tons around. The vehicle seemed stable, however.
I wouldn't try to tow anything bigger or heavier even though it's rated up to 7000, but I'm just chicken like that.
