Tow Hitch Bolts

Stuck CAPS

New member
Well, I met up with rinkman07 today, really nice guy, and I picked up a weight distributing tow hitch. Sadly, when he removed it, he had a lot of seized bolts on it, and broke a few. (Not baggin' on you man!) Does anyone know the size of the bolts? I've looked at what I'd think to be pertaining to this on villagetoyotaparts, as well as a bit through the FSM, and can't find what size bolts it uses! Any help would be great. Thanks.

Your talking the bolts that hold the hitch to the frame, right? Is so I think they were M8 or M10 x 1.25. I might have one at home and I can check tonight.

Thank you! Side note: this is for the weight distrib hitch not the one held up by 2 bolts.

Yeah. The one from the v8. The threaded holes are already in your frame. If you have a old skid plate bolt see if it fits. Those are M8x1.25.

The ones he's checking for you will be the right ones. 3 per side for after market hitches.
Not sure, but, they might be the same size as the ones holding the recovery hoop on the rear also.
You can pull one and check, just might need longer though.

I believe it's the OEM with the steel tubes. It came on his, however, being that he bought it last year and it's an '05, I'm not too sure.

I don't have the tools laying around to take the bolts off at home right now, but knowing Toyota they are most likely M10x1.25 but they could also be M8x1.25; I would just grab a couple of each, one of the two sizes should fit. The Bolts that hold the rear tow hook are going to be bigger and I can't remember what size we use for those bolts as those are probably M12's

m8/m10 is head and 1.25 is bolt diameter right? If so, what length will I need?

M8 & M10 are the metric size, 1.25 is the pitch. Measure the thickness of the hitch, add a washer and the thickness of the frame so you get complete thread bite. Probably a 25-30mm will be fine. But measure it.

I won't be home till 7pm ish. If you go to ace, but a M8 and M10 x 1.25 see which fits then go back in and get the rest. Should be $0.50 each + washer

Okay, will do. I guess I'm on my way now.

Actually, It seems the side bolts are M8's, as the recov loop bolted to the frame where that hitch mounts is stamped "8". I'm guessing I'll be using that same bolt size. The 2 fronts are stamped "11" on my V6 tow hitch. Should I pick those up too?

M8x1.25x30mm

M8 indicates that the bolt is Metric with an 8mm bolt diameter (measured from the top of the threads)

1.25 indicates the thread pitch (decimal number indicates metric thread)

30mm indicates the length of the bolt, measured from the mating surface (i.e bottom of the bolt head) of the bolt to the tip of the bolt.

So that's the size?
Edit: And should I just buy matching nuts and washers? Or will I need a lock nut?

Nuts are mounted to the frame already, flat and lock washers with the bolts.

I'm getting confused now. I ran in there and the M8's look small, so I'm guessing they're M10's? On my runner they're stamped "8," and on my mom's "8.8," So I'm guessing it's CLASS 8.8 M10.
