tow strap hookups or points

Haha!

Where do you install the warn shackle? Do you need any special tools? and is this something where you need 2 up front and 2 in the rear?

DITTO! That's what I have and use also! I've used it to pull out Tahoes and Hummers being stupid. I've also used it numerous times to pull vehicles down the road and tie off outdoor canopies! Works awesome!

The shackle is definitely cast iron. You would have to drop a train on it to break it!

I'm not trying to disrespect you or argue, but cast Iron is what most engine blocks are made out of as well as old steam boilers. Have you ever seen a broken connecting rod shatter an engine block? Or perhaps seen someone shatter an old boiler with a sledge hammer to get it out of a basement easier? Cast Iron has good wear and thermal characteristics, but is VERY brittle! Take an old cast iron camshaft drop it on the ground and watch it shatter! Crankshafts, connecting rods, flywheels, axle shafts, wheel spindles, etc....Are usually made from cast or forged STEEL, that is very strong compared to cast Iron. FYI anything that has a very wide parting line is Forged, cast parts have a skinny pencil tip width parting line. Take a close look at the parting line down the top center of the warn shackle and you will see it's a forged Steel piece.

It goes into the tow hitch and is secured with the hitch pin.

I don't have a problem with your opinion and disrespect shouldn't even enter into someone's opinion. Not that it means anything but I do have a High Pressure Black Seal that requires studies in metallurgy and cast iron would need a very heavy blow/impact to break. Cast iron is the perfect material/metal for this purpose. Also you have to take the cost into consideration. Take a close look at the shackle itself; you can clearly see the sand casting dimples on the surface. You may want do a little more research on this, before responding.

I appreciate your opinion and really don't want to turn this into a debate. If you have ever seen a forged steel crankshaft out of an engine compared to a cast steel one you would probably understand the difference. The counterweights on the forged steel shaft have the exact textured finish as the shackle does with the wide, flat parting line. Do you also think the shackle itself is cast iron? Or just the Warn piece?
 
I have asked Warn for a clarification. The reason I think it is cast iron is because forged steel can bend or twist and cast iron is so brittle that there is very little give, if any. Also forged steel is more expensive to make and machine. There is a way to check. Forged steel will ring when hit with a hammer and cast iron will just thud. If I can, tonight, I will give it a whack!

I understand your logic and again I wasn't trying to turn this into a debate. I talked with Tom at Warn yesterday and after he talked with engineering they confirmed the material with the email I attached in the previous response. You are definitely correct with the ring test, I have done it with crankshafts. I'm not quite sure if it will yield the same results with such a small dense mass? Let me know.
 
so is there anywhere on the front of the 4 runner where i can put on a after market hook... or should i just use the two tie down points... and how is the back tie down hook...same thing...and im planning on gettting a warn shackel for the hitch...what size are they again

I have used my factory front loops for recovery with no problems. You could fabricate plates welded to the frame and attach aftermarket tow hooks. The warn shackle fits into a standard 2"x2" tow reciever.
 
Oh, I just make these out of 4mm profile pipes. Just normal black steel. (The recovering shackle, that is)

But of course, I haven't pulled a 350 ford with it...



...but I've pulled a 3500 dodge running 46s, out of a snow pit.

Perhaps I'll post some pics later tonight, if I have the time.
It doesn't need to be cast/forged iron/steel/titanium.
 
I did my studies in French, so I'll try to be as clear as possible! Cast iron is very strong in compression, but is not worth a lot in tension. Cast iron is typically 4 times stronger in compression than it is in tension.

To clarify the terms:

Compression is when two forces are applied facing each other, just like if you would put a foam block between two cars and try to push the other, the foam is working in compression.

Tension is when the forces are applied in opposite ways, in other words, like a rope that would be attached to those same cars trying to go in opposite ways, the rope is working in tension.

The values below are changing depending on the material content, but gives a general idea. Note that a brittle material (such as cast iron, concrete, glass) has a very different compression and tension value. A ductile material (steel, aluminium) has very close values.

Cast iron allowable stress :
compression 120MPa
tension 30 MPa

Cast steel allowable stress :
compression and tension 300-400 MPa

If you look at the way the shakle is designed, I think it would break easily if it was cast iron. So my guess would be cast steel, just like your hitch.
 
Industrial shackles (even the small 1 or 2 tonne shackles) are all forged steel with a higher carbon content (1-1.5% carbon), not cast steel or cast iron (4% carbon). Having proper grain flow within a shackle greatly improves the strength and toughness - carbon increase surface hardness, too much and it becomes to brittle to do much good, which is why its only good under compression.

Castings are cheaper to make and I'm actually shocked to read that Warn would be making cast shackles, further more I have to agree with the previous post that it makes no sence to use cast iron shackles.
