Towing Capacity, 2003 V8

Someboday please educate me about the actual capacity of this baby!

I just got a big honkin hitch - can somebody translate what gross trailer weight vs distributed weight means?

Is a boat trailer weight distributed?

I got a round-tube Hidden Hitch class III installed(looks great).

A weight distributing and a weight carrying trailer, the only difference in on the hitch design. With the extra bits and pieces installed on the hitch, the load can somehow be transferred to the front of the tow vehicle. So it allows a heavier load without crushing the rear suspension. 2003 towing capacity

Locally (central TX), there is still a better selection of 2003 4WD Ltd. V8s than 2004s. I need to tow 6500 - 7000 pounds, and have a weight distributing hitch on my trailer. Toyota's 2003 specs say 5000 pounds is the max. However, it looks like there was a running production change, and at least the "C" suffix models will tow 7000 pounds (weight distributing). (Actually, depending on payload, it may be more like 6500 Pounds.) It looks like PWRHungry must have bought a "C" model.

Can anyone confirm these distinctions? Is the payload of a 2003 "C" as good as a 2004, which is listed as 1215 pounds for a 4WD V8 Ltd. ?

Is anyone aware of any other late production changes for 2003? It would be nice to know if 2003s are as "safe" to buy as 2004.

I had the stock hitch on mine, which was advertized to handle only 5000 lbs. I noticed in my manual that the potential towing capacity was well over 7000 lbs, so I went online (hitch.com?) and upgraded to the biggest capacity model for the 4runner I could find.

I'm told that 7500 lbs would be a stretch for this vehicle given its length and weight, and that I'd be advised to get a bigger transmission cooler if I planned to try it, FYI.

AFAIK, the 5000lbs tow rating on the 2003s are for "dummy proof" purposes. That's the lowest, most conservative rating for the V6. When you look at the user manual for the 2003s, it clearly indicates that the V8 with Class 3 hitch has a much higher capacity than 5000 lbs.

However, due to the fact that most newer SUVs in the market now are using the towing capacity as one of their main selling points (VW Toureg, Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder Armada are all listed at 7000+lbs with "proper equipment" installed), that's why Toyota decides to advertise the 4Runner in the same regard, BUT with restrictions outlining the hardware requirement.

Towing capacity was the biggest determining factor for me when I bought mine. Otherwise I would probably have gotten the Pilot/MDX or Murano (3500lbs).

Hey Brewster.. Funny thing you guys mention this topic about the hitches.. I just bought my 2003 v8 Limited.. My friend has the 03 v6 Limites which he bought earlier this year.. My trailor hitch is much bigger then his, and is more visable from the rear of the vehicle.. Does this mean I have a "C" model? If so how can I tell.. Also did you guys have a hitch plug/cap thing come with the vehicle?

(Sorry for the delay. I've been out in the desert with no Internet access.) I haven't really learned anything more definitive about "C" models, or whatever, and part of wht I'm reporting is hearsay. Initially, all the salesmen I talked to said all 2003s had a 5000 pound towing limit. I found a 4WD 2003 V8 manufactured in July 2003 that had the bigger hitch, labelled for 7000 pounds or so. The salesman pointed out that that the model number on the window sticker had a "C" suffix. He later told me that he had checked and found out that the "C" model V8s were factory equipped to tow 7000 pounds. I found another 4WD 2003 V8 at a different dealer that had the smaller hitch, along with an "A" suffix on the model number. The 2003 V8 "C" model I originally looked at was sold before I could complete my research, so now i'm looking for a 2004.

I have the OE V8 hitch on my car and here are the load limits:

This full frame Toyota hitch is available online and bolts right up to the frame. I know someone who added one to his GX470.

First post so apologize in advance if I haven’t learned correct protocols.

So I got one of these subject 4 runners. I was surprised when none of the hitch receivers I own would fit, hitting the spare. I cut one down with a sawzall and it fits. But now I’m thinking, what is going on? Why won’t standard receivers fit? Is the factory hitch worthless, are guys replacing it? Is the factory one hard to remove?

I did look through 15 pages of threads with no luck, so I tried.

Remove the spare and a standard hitch will work fine. It's a tight fit in there so with the spare in place, you need a shorter hitch. Not that big of a deal. The factory hitch receiver is rated for 7500 lbs if a recall, I wouldn't call it worthless. It's bolted to the frame with either 4 or 6 bolts, I forget exactly. The frame is built very beefy back there and is more than capable of handling the towing capacity.
