Toyo Open Country A/T or BFG KO

Well Im commuting 600 miles a week and at the end of the summer my dad thinks it would be a good idea to replace the tires before winter.

I have done tons of research and have narrowed it down to these two. I will most likely getting them in 265/65/17 size as I like the speed, handling etc of the current setup and this way I will only need 4. I have no interest in trimming which I understand I have to do with the KO's in the 70 size.

So, I mainly drive on the highway dont really go off road and if I do, its sandy hills etc - not really into rock crawling. Snow performance, wet weather performance, and quietness are important to me. I have never been in a car with AT tires so I cant comment on their ride/noise and I am looking for insight from you guys who moved from the Dunlops to an AT tire. Unlike many of you, the Dunlops have performed fine IMO; however, I want an aggressive looking tire.

I plan on painting my wheels black too so IDK if that comes into play as far as looks are concerned.

I would immediately get on the KO bandwagon but I am afraid of the poor wet weather performance (hydroplaning) I am hearing and unnecessary road noise some are commenting on. I am staying away from the Nitto TG due to their reputation of humming on the highway - also not a fan of the sidewall.

im not sure if this is correct, but i heard that nitto are made by toyo, & that the toyo at & nitto tg are basicly the same except for the side wall & wear rating. at least thats what some are saying in the taco & tundra forums. on a side note, a friend had the toyos on a jeep cherokee & said they were great on highway, good in most weather , not bad offroad, & so far,at a guess, looks like he ll get around 45-55000 out of them. although i myself have never gotten anything near that milage no matter what brand tire or vec.i had , hope this helps since you put on so many miles per week.

I think the BFGs especialy are a bad choice for almost all street driving since their wet and dry handling characteristics are so-so in my many experiences. The Nittos or the Toyots are both better choices and much cheaper but still not the best for what kind of driving you are doing and how many miles you are doing a week.

I think Revos or maybe those new Hankook A/T look a little more street friendly and probably would return a bit better MPGs over time than the Toyos or BFGs and both should be quieter.
I drive hard on my Nittos and I'm just over 45k on 'em so that should be right on for the Toyos too.

I'd seriously stay away from BFGs if you really aren't going off road.
I like my Nittos and have treated me well on my DD and the Toyos should deliver similar results bit I'd still look a little harder for a tire that could give you better returns but still look good.

x2. Completely agree with RonM. BFG AT KO should not be on your list at all! In addition, does BFG AT KO come in 265/65/17?? I am too lazy to check, but i don't think so.

I would also add: Michelin LTX A/T-2, Yokohama Geolander HT/S, Goodyear Fortera series, Goodyear SilentArmor, and REVOs mentioned above.

After researching some more last night I really have found no complaints for the revos and they don't look half bad either. I'm probably going to get them in the 70 size - its just tood bad I need a spare but that's ok.

I am about to replace my set of Toyo Open Country's that I have been running for about 4 years now. They have about 80,000 miles on them with about 2-3/32 of tread left. They have been awesome tires. I have done some light wheeling with them, mostly mud but some rocks, and they have never let me down. They have very little road noise, if any and I have never had a problem with them in wet weather. They dont like the icy sleet stuff we get here in Oklahoma in the winter, but what tire does well in ice anyway.

I am currently running 265/70-16 but I have ordered 265/75-16 through the local Robertson Tire and I am getting them for $132 each, that includes mounting and balancing. I had the local small town tire shop and them going back and forth with the prices, so I think I came out pretty good since they originally wanted like $150 something a tire.

Yeah, I'll try and get a picture up this weekend. I am supposed to go in friday afternoon and get them mounted.

I can only ad this: My wife decided to put a set of Toyo Open Country AT on her 4x4 Escape . I drove in it once when the tires were new and it was much nicer than the Bridgestone Duellers AT ( regular versions ) they were much quieter and smoother. She said they were great in the snow (until she took out a light pole , then she said the tires were not good in the snow ....lol , surprise CYA ) .

Personally I think they are a decent tire.

One thing I will add about my Revos is that I have had 265/70/17 since day 1 on the 4R . I put 50k+ on the first set (should have replaced at 45k) I could not get time to do tires so my wife took it and got me another set of Revos for me . I have never had to rebalance , I get decent gas milage with them and decent ride although I do run them at 40psi. It has been a decent tire . I would like to try something different though , just because ..... like Mich AT/2 , Nitto's TG , Firestone Destination AT , and the list goes on. This is my first truck that I have ever owned that has not had a set of BFG's on it.

The Firestone Destination AT I have heard great things about and they are priced nice (plus I could get then in 265/75/17 )

I frequently find myself doing 80+ on the highway and sometimes find the urge to go 100+. What are the speed ratings on tires like these? Will the bfg's be unstable at that speed (80+) because if they are they're out of the question.

Any input on this matter? How do the Toyo's do at apeed?

Yeah, i don't know about doing 100+ on the BFG...maybe you need to look at HIGHWAY tires, not all-terrains. I have taken my G500 to 85 mph...and my G did not like it, more due to the brickwall aerodynamics than tires.

These were $133 a piece at Robertson Tire in Claremore, OK. Mounted and balanced they came out to $155 each. Hope this helps.
