Hey everyone thanks for the taking the time to read.

I am about to go forward into purchasing a a new 2012 Toyota 4runner

but don't know whether i should get the Limited or stick to the SR5

is it really worth the 9-10k price difference?

Limited has Party System, Leather Seating Built in GPS Rims

as there any other perks into purchasing it? any current owners love a certain features that the SR5 don't have?:thanks:

Come on now. I would post an answer, but hell, this is readily available info anywhere you look on the web and pure opinion.

I, personally, did not like the Limited. I prefer part time 4x4 with the old school lever engagement.

Good luck in your search.

I'd recommend going to Toyota.com. They list every single difference between the two models.

The only person qualified to answer your question is 1engineer. He lives for stuff like this. Maybe shoot him a PM?

:lmao:

@1E - I got this, I'm retired and you have work to do.

@OP.

I am NOT harshing you, but you have not done enough BASIC homework to be "about to purchase".

We don't want you to be back in three months lamenting your selection due to a misinformed purchase.

The differences between the three 5th Gen 4Rs are a matter of personal choice and what you need from the vehicle. We cannot decide that for you. What RiDE said ....

Thanks man. I was gonna start by saying "The United States of America has a party system too. It's called a democracy." How in the...

Way to welcome a new member guys. Geeze, it was his first post. Seems we've finally adopted the culture I've seen on every other board. Must be some kind of inevitable cyber evolution.

OP: LTD has smart key, climate control, full time all wheel drive, and GPS option. None are options on the SR5 minus perhaps GPS. For my purposes, only the LTD was sufficient. I think it is worth the premium price. Smart key alone is a huge upgrade - it is more than push button start.

You will find this general topic discussed many times if you find the right search terms. Good luck.

I have the Sr5 and love it. Its all personal preference and how you will be using ur TR4. I believe you can find alot of those upgrades that are in a limited in a sr5 such as navi, party mode, auto seats, upgraded rims.... The only major differences that you cant interchange is the All time 4wd on the limited.... YOu gotta do research on the acutal vehicle that the dealer has... Good luck shopping.

Here's the difference.

When I joined this forum, I read through probably 30 or so pages of posts in the 5th Gen sub-forum. Lots of information to process- but well worth the effort. I got up to speed relatively quickly, and could start contributing...We are here because we share a common interest, and can learn from each other.

I, for one, do not enjoy helping people that are just too lazy to help themselves to what is already laid out right in front of their fingertips. Have I posted stupid questions? Absolutely. Would I ever ask for help without at least trying to search for the answer? Absolutely not.

---off my soapbox now. :)

In addition to the luxury items that come with the Limited, there are two other very important differences between it and the SR5: 1) the Ltd has fulltime 4WD versus the SR5s part-time system, and 2) the Ltd has XREAS.

The Ltd fulltime 4WD system is always in 4WD. It has a lockable, limited-slip center differential that allows the front and rear driveshafts to turn at different speeds while still delivering torque to both axles. This allows you to be in 4WD and yet still go around turns without binding. In contrast, the SR5 has a part-time 4WD system that should not be used on dry pavement.

Here in the Northeast, in the winter we often have days (well, maybe not this winter...) where you can go from a snow-covered road, to a wet road, to a dry road, and back again in a mile or two. With a part-time system, you would either have to leave it in 2WD or shift back and forth between 2WD and 4WD. One place the Ltd can really come in handy is if your street has been plowed down to dry pavement, but the plows have left a mound of snow at your driveway -- you can be in 4WD and still easily make that turn.

Once you lock the Ltd's center diff, it behaves just like the part-time system on the SR5.

The other difference is the Ltd's XREAS system, which consists of cross-linked shock absorbers. This significantly reduces roll while cornering. If you are going to significantly lift the truck, then XREAS is useless for you as you'll have to replace the shocks anyways. But if you are keeping it stock, the XREAS equipped Ltd will handle better.

Good to know on XREAS I was wondering what it did when people talked about it, either way wasn't trying to spend that kind of money.

OP: I just picked up my SR5 3 weeks ago. I only have/wanted the convenience package and the auto dimming rearview camera as options since i was trying to keep the cost under $40k. I really like it but I'm much more of a utilitarian person so the need for nav (iPhone has GPS and I keep maps in the car when it doesn't work in the mountains) or leather (2 bird dogs, surfboards, hiking, biking etc. I went with neoprene seat covers and rubber mats). You can add leather and nav to an SR5 but for the price of those additions you're better off getting a LE. Not sure where the Party mode button only being in an LE info came from (previous years possibly) but I have it in my SR5. Overall I'm pretty happy because it's my first T4R (I've wanted one since I was a kid) and I'm not into uber fancy options. So it's all about personal preference. Good luck on your purchase

Just browsing from the 4th gen forum, and this is off topic, but did they change this from 4th to 5th gen? My part time 4wd can be driven on hard surfaces until you lock the center diff, you say the 5th gen can't?

The torsen center diff is only in the limited on the 5th gen. The part about having to switch between 4wd and 2wd with part time 4wd is incorrect. You will only have binding if you go around tight turns when on dry pavement in 4wd.

Yes. All trim levels of the 4th gen have the Torsen center diff. You don't have a part-time 4WD system on your 4th gen. You either have a full-time system (V8) or a multi-mode system (V6). The multi-mode system is just like the fulltime (that is, it has a center diff), except that it also has a 2WD mode.

When your 4th gen is in 4WD, the front and rear driveshafts can turn at different speeds (unless you lock the center diff). It can do that because it has a center differential. A part-time system does not have a center diff, just a transfer case, so the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed. Since the rear wheels cut closer on a turn, the rear wheels need to turn slower than the front wheels, which means the rear driveshaft needs to turn slower than the front driveshaft. It can't on a part-time system, so driving a part-time system in 4WD on dry pavement can stress the driveline.

On the 5th gen, only the Ltd trim level gets the Torsen center diff -- the 5th gen SR5 and Trail Edition have a traditional part-time 4WD system with no center diff.
