I was recently searching for the price of a replacement alternator. I prefer a real Toyota part so I went to Toyota.com --> parts --> local dealer which is Carlsbad, CA. I looked up the price of an alternator which is $253.

As I have mentioned above I then noticed that I was actually looking at is actually a redirect to trademotion.com which is the also ToyotaPartsCheap.com



I then went to ToyotaPartsCheap.com and WHOOOLAAA they sell the alternator for $203 vs $252. Same exact part supply for $50 less.

No, actually that is just the standard catalog. Lots of dealers use it.

And BTW, Toyota of Dallas (toyotapartsales.com) is significantly cheaper than toyotapartscheap.com. I can't figure out why people always suggest toyotpartscheap. I guess they enjoy paying too much.

I challenge anyone to find a cheaper dealer than toyotpartsales.com. They are consistently 27-28% below MSRP.

it is more than just the catalog. the toyota dealer is letting the customer buy parts directly from toyotapartscheap. look at the URL redirect, the page is actually a tunnel to the non toyota website complete with checkout as well.

I don't know how the catalog works but this is the actual website of another site.

Anyways, I just wanted to get the word out. I did not know this was how some dealers are doing it.

Lastly, I went to the website you suggested Nelson and the alternator is only $182 + core fee.

Yeah, I know, trade motion manages the online catalogue. It appears that Toyota uses Trademotion, and many of their dealers do too.

Other dealers use a different catalog (like toyotapartszone) which I have seen other places as well.

Each dealer don't keep a browse-able inventory for every vehicle they work on, it is all centralized (like the "cloud").

Toyota just uses Trademotion's catalog instead of their competitors (don't know who runs the other catalogs). Every OEM does it this way. It is standard outsourcing strategy.

BTW, Toyota of dallas uses the same trademotion catalog, but trademotion doesn't show up in their url. It is just a matter of how they design their website.

I have a Toyota distribution warehouse right up the street from my work. If this stuff weren't so outsourced and streamlined, then maybe I'd be able to go walk in the door there and get any part, any time. That'd be sweet.

I am curious though of the pricing structure, as different dealership using the same disty system and e-catalogue have vastly different prices. 20-30% markup is pretty dang high.

Resurrecting this thread because whoever actually manages the catalog used by Toyotapartsales and toyotapartscheap has changed it and it now BLOWS!

I always look up the part number on my own, then do a PN search on toyotapartsales.com to find it and add it to my cart, this is to make sure I get the exact part I need. But now, the part number search function no longer works (at all it seems), and the browsing still sucks as bad as it ever did. I am pissed.:redbrick:

I noticed that this weekend

when i was using google to research on upper strut mounts. I used spybot search and destroy and scanned my PC and it returns a whole bunch of registry entries where cookies from here or one of the parts sites had made.

Im running defender and avast, neither of which caught these registry changes. Is there something in mozilla i can add on to attempt to keep my PC mal-adware clean?

YES!!!!!

For FireFox users, install and run the "NoScript" add-on. What it does is block 3rd Party sites from running JavaScript on each page unless expressly given permission.

This works best with new sites. You might be surprised and shocked that even simple sites are actually allowing 10-20 other sites to run JavaScript in your browser window via their webpage. This add-on is very unique and only for FireFox. I have been using it for 6 months. It remembers everytime you set it so you will only ever have to set it once per site.

Try it out "NoScript" for FireFox. I have T4R.org set to 'allow all' but only because I trust this site.

You all missed the point... This isn't about mal-ware prevention, and it was never really about the alternator, that was just an example. And most of us know about rock auto. I am talking about OEM sources, not aftermarket.

I just submitted a comment to them about it, we'll see what they say. I might see if I can go straight to trademotion and try to lodge a complaint.

From a development standpoint, I can't understand why they designed the new format the way they did. It is seemingly intentionally inconvenient for someone trying to find the part they need.

Plus it seems very glitchy right now. Not sure if that is just a toyotapartsales thing, or if it is in the trademotion coding, but I straight up can't find parts right now without getting an error.
