Toyota could be done with diesel engines in Europe, the brand’s executive vice president says.

During an interview with Autocar at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show, Didier Leroy expressed his belief that the company may not launch any new diesel-powered vehicles in Europe.

“My personal opinion - and this is my personal opinion, not a company one - is no, we’ll not launch another diesel car,” Leroy said.

Interestingly, Leroy said that his opinion on diesels wasn’t formed after VW’s dieselgate scandal and was instead established in 2014 when he made a decision not to offer the C-HR crossover with a diesel.

“We took the view, a long time ago, that we would not sell the C-HR [crossover] with a diesel engine. At the time, the distributors were against my decision. They said they needed diesel for the market. But we needed to follow the long-term trend of eco-vehicles,” he asserted.

Leroy believes that the firm’s current diesel vehicles will be phased out during each product update.

No surprise

I remember seeing an article saying Paris, London and other city will ban gasoline/diesel cars in the near future. This is no surprise. First Volvo announced the electrification of their fleet, then came GM not long ago. The ICE will be slowly be disappearing and apparently it will start sooner than later. I care little as long as manufacturers can continue to improve battery capacity and costs. The future is electrification like it or not.

I only bought my truck in diesel because I knew deep inside that I'd remove it one day.

Not necessarily. I think an electric motor paired with some long range battery packs on a proper chassis could be great off-road. Get some high output folding solar panels and you could recharge yourself right on the trail, something you can't do with gas or diesel. Don't get me wrong, I love internal combustion engines but I do see how electric may actually be better. As far as diesel goes, definitely sounds like Toyota is moving away from it. Can't blame them though, all the emission requirements and associated equipment decreases the efficiency and reliability while the costs for all this skyrockets. Diesel is out of the question for me, at least for something I need to depend on. I still wouldn't mind finding an old 12 valve Cummins to tinker with but I don't think I'd own any of the newer diesels.

Yep I am afraid Toyota is changing along with Ford and others. Meanwhile Mazdas engineers are awesome. Solving efficiency issues sans electricity. I think they don't have an EV or hybrid model? Pretty cool engine design here...

Also it's a shame what they have done to diesels with the emissions. Diesel is superior to gas in many ways but the emissions crap they put on them in America have destroyed that superiority. Another problem is people have no clue diesel is actually better for the environment than gas. I would love to have a diesel FJ70 landcruiser especially now that it looks like they might die off someday...
