I have bought new and certified Toyotas for 30 years and last year bought a used certified 2010 4x4 LTD 4 runner with 62K ....great buy I thought .
After a few months I noticed a whine at 70 mph from the rear diff that got worse .This vehicle had three warranties on it. The 12 months bumper to bumper , the certified warranty to 100K and an extended warranty I bought for $1200 to 125K.
After two months talking to the dealer and the local field rep they agreed to replace the rear diff , but did not admit liability . They gave me the "good faith " BS and just cos you are a good customer etc.
They did not replace the housing just the rear differential itself and this fixed 60% of the whine but it did not disappear , so I took it back in . The field rep refused to look at it again ,so I wrote in to California "office of the president " and got a very nice lady who said she would look into it. Long story short after two months of arguing they refused to do any more ,saying it was normal wear on the vehicle ,that they had tried to fob me off with when I first brought it in.
The dealer was great throughout and finally bought it back from me @82K, but I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth .The reason one buys warranties is for large repairs like this , but clearly Toyota were applying cost cutting exercising and would not go over and above anything their field rep decided within his budget.
I bought two new toyota vehicles for my family after this from the same dealer and this year also bought a 2008 4th gen with 87K on it from them.. Maybe the 5th gen is underpowered with the V6 only and the rear diff is a problem .It was the first year as well but I was disgusted with Corporate Toyota failing to stand behind this problem in spite of three warranties on this rear differential.
Needles to say I have not bought another warranty on my three purchases since and will take my chances going forward.
My opinion is that they have a budget for claims like this and they were way over last year with all the accelerator problems .They deny this of course .
