Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

Glad I found this thread. I just bought a 2011 and have the exact same problem. Plan on calling the dealership today to get this scheduled.

I might suggest this thread get added to the tsb thread. I searched high and low for it in there, but finally found it via the search bar.

As far as it causing damage or not.....the fact that a TSB was issued makes me think there might be more than just an annoying sound.

I do not recall Toyota ever admitting to any issues out of the kindness of their hearts.

I hope it "sticks" and I am not sad I had it addressed.

At ~48,000 miles on my 2013 LE I experienced the 'bump from the rear'. I'm glad these threads are on here, or else I would have thought I was hallucinating. :crazy:

I purchased a grease gun and Moly and multipurpose grease. Zerks looked like they had never been touched. Wear area on slip yoke was dry as a bone. (Prop shaft lube interval seems to be 15K normal and 5K 'special circumstances'). I'm pessimistic if dealer 'Toyota care' service ever touched them.

I put 5 pumps of Moly grease into each slip yoke zerk with no visible extension of shaft. 3 pumps each of multipurpose into the U-joint spiders. No extrusion of grease from any seal, but rear U-joint gave me a 'rice crispy' sound indicating it was pushing some air out. Ironically, getting the grease gun off of the zerk was the toughest part.

Grease gun=30$, 2 tubes of grease=15$. Knowing it was done right=priceless.

Reading closely in the maintenance book, it looks like any place with de-icer or dust is special circumstances. I'm going to apply again at 50K, and every 5k thereafter. I figure 3 pumps each from now on will be sufficient to keep grease flowing through the moving parts.

The problem doesn't seem to be limited to these years.

I have this issue on my 2015 TEP. Greased the fittings as they were dry as a bone (dealership supppsedly did 5k & 10k service). Went away away for a while but has come back recently. Does anyone else have this problem on 2014 or newer units?

I seriously doubt that many (if any) dealers will automatically lube the propshaft as part of routine OCs.

When I have my OCs I make certain that PS lube is on the ticket, plus I make very clear to the service writer that I expect it to be done. My problem has never returned, but I admit to never crawling under to check.

This is discussed constantly over on the Tacoma forum - tacomaworld.com. My '15 Tacoma V6 automatic PreRunner on occasion feels as if something hit me from the rear when I come to a stop. It's a very gentle "hit", but noticeable.

2016 TRD Pro. Hit the road Jan. 1. 800 miles into it, I'm getting the clunky-thumpy noise from the back.... Like I have a two litter bottle rolling around hitting the rear gate at random times. Assuming I'm have the same issue I'm reading about here, and if this is a known issue for Toyota, that seems to date back as far as 2011, why is this still an issue? Is Toyota just ignoring it?

Doesn't sound like the same issue to me. I've had it on 2 different GX470s and my 4Runner, and it's definitely not random. On each of my trucks, it was 100% repeatable and directly related to how hard the braking was. If I came to a stop slowly, no clunk. If I broke hard, I would get the clunk as soon as I released the brake. Also, I never really got any noise, just the feel of the "clunk."

As for Toyota ignoring issues, that one is absolutely true, based on my experience. Like I said, I had this clunk issue on both of my GX470s...the first one was a 2003. I was thrilled to find the exact same issue on my 10 year newer 4Runner.

Also had a similar experience with a serious vibration under acceleration with my '13 Tacoma from new. As I dug into the issue (for litigation purposes), I found that it had been an issue since 2005, which Toyota had issues multiple band-aid crap fixes for. My truck was one of the first to get the real fix.

This is exactly what happens to me in my 2015 TEP. Never happened to me in my 2004 SR5.

Interesting. My clunk seemingly isn't repeatable with consistency. Or on demand. And it for sure is an audible noise. Even a passenger asked "WTF was that?" It has happened during acceleration. Deceleration. It even happened once after putting the truck in gear to back out of the driveway. It kind of sounds like a vent cover, in the rear gate, that might be popping open with a specific amount of pressure or at a specific temp? A little frustrating not to know what the heck it is.

I have an occasional clunk when coming to a stop, I don't think its the drive shaft. I always assumed it was a harder down shift into 1st. I haven't figured out how to make it do it consistently though. I have read on other platforms (GM Silverado/Sierra) have similar issue and that is due to the transmission programming for emissions. I think that they try hold the higher gear as long as possible for mpg. I've heard that after market reprogramming does fix it.

If it did it all the time it would bother me, but its only occasional. I'll try and pay more attention to it to see if I can identify the condition it occurs.

I took my 2012 4Runner Trail to A-1 Toyota in New Haven CT with these symptoms. Bump in the rear feeling at idle, in drive, with brakes on. Also a lurch/bump type feeling when coming to a hard stop on steep highway ramps etc. Brought a copy of the service bulletin with me to the dealer. My truck has 80k miles but i have the 125K platinum extended warranty. The dealer took my truck in on Monday and told me they would call after confirming the symptoms. Two hours later they called and stated that they would cover the repair and my loaner/rental vehicle. Part had to ordered from Boston, it arrived late Tuesday morning and repair was done by 4:15pm. Billed cost covered by warranty was $755.00. Loaner car was a 2016 Corolla, at 6' tall, I could barely get into the car. Dealer did throw in a free car wash and replaced a missing radio knob for free as well, great service at A-1!

any specifics on what the fix and issue was?

I have a new 2016 4runner and i have the same thing, stopped at red light, get a lurch like someone tapped my rear bumper. it makes me look back to make sure nobody hit me. I've searched around the forum and noticed a lot of posts of this but more geared toward older years
