Toyota OEM remote start turns truck off

Try driving a truck away cold after a -40 night.
Did that a few times last month, I was mostly just thankful it started without a block heater or having to use ether. If you are dressed to operate in those temperatures, a cold vehicle shouldn't present any issue.

I'm not claiming you'll die out there warming your truck up.

But the convenience of remote start in such a climate is hard to argue with.

And isn't argued with my the majority of people who live in such a climate without heated parking options.

Hey!

With full knowledge of the door open = engine stop 'feature' I recently purchased and installed the OEM remote start system. I chose to go with OEM to avoid any potential electrical problems.

The main use for me is to be able to leave the vehicle with my dogs inside, with the engine and a/c running for 15 minutes.

Was the install easy to do? I'm pretty handy and have been contemplating doing the install myself to save a few bucks.

I don't know about the OEM install but a properly installed aftermarket system won't cause any electrical problems either...at least not in my experience on multiple vehicles.

The install of the aftermarket ones isn't even that tough if you you know which wires to grab.

Here's the wiring for a '12, not sure if it's 100% safe to assume a '14 would be the same but it seems likely to me.

Depends on how comfortable you are tearing your dash apart. Here is the installation guide:

You will have to take it to the dealer to have it programmed. I thought I would be able to do it with my eBay cable and techstream, but the ebay cables do not work for the procedure.

Did you not read my response right above? I told you the fortin bypass module is meant to interface with aftermarket remote start systems, it bypasses the transponder key so the aftermarket alarm can trick the vehicle into thinking that the key is present and go about starting up the vehicle. I has absolutely nothing to do with the OEM Toyota remote start system.

Simply put, its bypassing the transponder key, and not "bypassing" this one feature you're thinking about.

The factory remote start system has it's own way of bypassing the transponder because it integrates straight into the vehicle's ECM and communicates with it to do it's thing.

On the other hand the aftermarket variety all just trick the vehicle into thinking the key is there and it is being physically turned by the driver.

Not sure how much more convincing you need but if you don't want to believe me go make a post on that 12volt forum, there are a bunch of very smart car audio/electronics experts there and will probably tell you the same thing, lol.

The fortin bypass module is just another one of many aftermarket modules that can bypass the RFID transponder in your key...it has nothing to do with bypassing the factory shut off function when you open the door. If you want to bypass that you need to get an entirely new aftermarket remote start installed, and your factory remote start removed. The factory remote start is heavily integrated into the wiring harness so I doubt there's just a simple wire you can snip or jump to accomplish what you want to do.

What you appear to have said in your first post is that Fortin is an "aftermarket module that can bypass the RFID transponder". It was just not clear in your statement that there is no bypass option for an OEM remote start system. I therefore have no option but to remove the system I have based on your last comment. You can probably understand why I would want to be 100% sure about that. "The factory remote start is heavily integrated into the wiring harness so I doubt there's just a simple wire you can snip or jump to accomplish what you want to do." That doesn't sound like 100% sure to me. Also, based on you last comment, you seem to be easily agitated when you think your advice is being challenged. lol? I do appreciate any solutions to my issue though...thanks.

I am not easily agitated because you challenged my advice, I really could not careless if you listen to me or not, but at least take a few seconds to educate yourself and understand about all the parts you are asking about before asking the same question over and over again and not listening to others here.

If you must know I am pretty irritated that you don't take the 30 seconds to google what a Fortin module is and realize it has nothing to do with what you are asking. Aside from that, I figured I'd not be a jerk and try to help you out and explain it because I went through the same thing, but yet you're still not 100% satisfied even after several people here have told you it's not going to work.

It's not like most of us are talking out of our ass, I know Jeremy above has installed the OE remote start himself, and is speaking from experience; and I have installed an aftermarket remote start myself, so I'm also more than familiar with all the factory wiring behind the dash and how it's communicating.

But of course no one here is 100% certain, if you want 100% certainty go ask the engineers who designed it.

Anyway, I'm done trying to help, good luck on your quest for 100% certainty. Meanwhile I'll just go hop into my remote started truck and while the engine remains running when I open the door.

You just proved the point I was trying to make. You are one of those people who find conflict in everything. Good luck with that and your remote start...

That is standard for the OEM remote start system. There are several threads on here documenting attempts to bypass it, but as far as I can tell, none of them have worked.

The best way to get around it is to not get the OEM system and go with a Viper system or some other after-market solution.

Viper is NOT the best way to go, thats a opinion. There are many other good aftermarket solutions. I despise DEI thats why i chimed in LOL

Clarification:
There is just so much information going around for your 5th gen. Some of it wrong some of it right some of it doesnt apply if you did this or want to do that.

Definition: take over- when the vehicle doesnt shut down and require restart when the vehicle is remote started.

Fortin: Makes a module called EVO-All, that has take over mode. More involved procedure

ADS/Idatalink/FlashLogic: Makes a module called blade-al, ads-alca, or FLCAN. Currently it does not allow for take over

Xpresskit: makes a dball, this unit doesnt allow for take over

In order to use the fortin module, there must not be any OEM remote starter installed. It will as far as i know, will work with a aftermarket system. I do tons of Compustar that uses the ADS bypass modules. So none of the cars i do have take over. Hondas, Acuras, Toyotas and Lexus with push to start all have no take over when it comes out of my shop. 99.9% of my customers have been ok with it.

Take over has caused issues with the 4 brands mentioned above. Aftermarket has followed the OEM route on this one.

So to have take over in your push to start toyota, a fortin module and aftermarket remote starter has to be installed.

Hopes this clarifies things and puts out some fires.

OUCH !:caked:

No it does not. It operates as a regular conventional key remote start.

I think I posted a video a few pages I think on keyed start abs smart key

Sorry real confused. Have a trd coming, added the oem remote start Key system. From what I read in online manual, unlike my wife's Tahoe, If I remote start, I will have had to lock the car, then when I unlock the car it will automatically shut off the engine ? Is that correct? Or is what the quote is saying is that with the remote works like regular remote key start - car dead until key inserted turn and go.

Yes it is an anti theft device, a bad one though. The key bypass, however, requires that when you get in the truck, you have the key and push the start button twice with the brake pedal depressed. Then you are free to drive off. Without the key in the car it would be impossible to steal. I am looking for anyone who has the bypass figured out.

I may be off here, but isn't that the same as just jumping in the vehicle, pressing the start button once and driving off? It takes about 5 seconds for the engine to restart.

Need to clarify when I say car dead, I meant it is still running, but cannot be driven. Gauges, shift gear, controls all locked as a safety precaution until ignition is turned.

Same here - have trd coming & they spec'd a factory remote start.

My understanding from gshadow is that a fortin module is required for takeover but will not work with factory starter for push-button starts.

Trying to clarify if this is the same with keyed starts.

From watching the videos he directed me to, I think we might be SOL.

Yep, exactly, the car is restarted and ready to go by the time I put my seatbelt on. Since I mostly use it so the car is warm for the kids it take them even longer to buckle up. Also I've gotten very good range starting mine. Could it be better? I suppose, but works as advertised for me, came with the truck and I'm happy it did.

1. You remote start it. Engine and accessories run.
2. You open door to get in, engine and accessories shut off.
3. You put key in ignition, turn the key, start the vehicle again.

Takes five seconds and those three steps are not hard to understand.
