Yeah I was a little disappointed at the way it worked when I first tried it out but still warms up the truck just fine.

I agree bad design. Not the end of the world but forces unnecessary restart load on all effected electronics and engine. Doesn't seem very Toyota-like. Thanks for the clarification.

Btw your wife's Tahoe can start only twice at 10 minutes each.
Let's clarify. This is from a installers experienced desk lol.
A: oem will always shut down and require restart as far as I know.
B: no remote starter, virgin vehicle with blade key. Aftermarket regardless of by pass used will allow take over. Jump in turn key step on brake and go.
C: oem limited vehicles with smart key push button start will require shut down and restart with fl can, ads al ca, blade al anything from idatalink with require restart. Foetin evo all will do take over but according to latest firmware guide it applies to only 2010 vehicles. 11 to 15 week be no take over.
No aftermarket bypass will work with oem starter as far as I know. I have gotten two runners in with oem starts that I pulled out to put aftermarket in.
It's not hard but with so much info is confusing the hell out of everyone. Especially now since its getting cold is on everyone's mind.
Not with smart key, flcan is just a rebadged ada alca from idatalink that works on the audio vox systems

I sure wish I would have read this thread before getting the OEM remote start.
Any updates with this or am I stuck with turning the car off every time I go to get in the truck after remote start?
I'm just dropping a note to let everyone know that the EVO-ALL absolutely works as a bypass in a 2015 4Runner Limited with push button start.
I can also confirm the Fortin EVO-ALL and Directed 5x10 alarm WILL work together for remote start takeover on a 2015 4Runner Limited with Smart Key (5th Generation). Full takeover means the engine will continue running without a restart when you approach the car and open the door. You can also leave the engine running and lock the car, then return and "take over" again. The installer had to wire the 5x10 Directed alarm the "old" way (not using the data connection to the OEM ECU) and then use the EVO-ALL to bypass the OEM immobilizer. I contacted Fortin to tell them that the 2015 worked in my setup, but I don't know if they updated their documentation.
I originally had a 5x10 Directed (Viper) alarm installed using the "modern" method of talking with the ECU, but opening the door triggered the engine shutdown. The Fortin device intrigued me. I spoke to Fortin support before buying, who was very helpful (props to them). I also had the displeasure of talking to Directed support. Directed support should be ashamed of themselves. They treated me like dirt and were very disrespectful--even the supervisor. In my opinion this is because I would not accept as gospel their ridiculous answer that remote start takeover is "impossible" with Smart Key Toyotas.
Note that my 4Runner was ordered without factory remote start.

This is touted by toyota as an advanced anti-theft feature. My wifes Acura does the same thing.

I really wished I would have done some research about the remote start before buying the 2017 4Runner limited and having the dealer install the Toyota OEM remote start. anyone know if there is any update to this "take over" issue?

I found this interesting and need some answers.
My brother and I both own 2016 4R limited with the smart keys. His came with the remote start option but mine did not. Our key fobs are the same type. I suspect the remote start function is wired into my harness but I likely need some other OEM part installed to get the remote start to function. I do not care about the range nor am I concerned about opening the door shuts the engine off. What parts do I have to buy from the dealer to get the remote start working?
Your suv is already premier.. you just need to buy the remote start unit and it’s a plug and play. It takes about an hour to install it.. here the part number you going to need PT398-89140..

We should talk. My contact info is in my signature. Factory starter has no expandability if things change in your life. Even if you trade it in and get a tundra, like a lot of guys do. I have two systems sent back to me actually right now waiting to get updated to a tundra plug and play setup! Oh it can do your defrosters too!!
So, is this something I could take out easily and sell? I never use it because garage kept and the range is not good enough to reach the plant parking lot. I’d love to put a couple hundred back in my pocket for something I never use.

It’s simple as long you know what you taking out.. and yes you could save couple hundred bucks.. some people prefer the oem vs aftermarket. I have the oem because I can get range from the house.. but once out and about I get mostly no range.. but my wife’s suv I put an aftermarket one I can get range anywhere.. remember oem is one way remote vs aftermarket that is two way.

i dont know if you will get several hundred for it, but if you do need the remove guides, shoot me a email i have them. email in signature.
not all aftermarket needs to be 2 way, it can be two way. you can also have full alarm from factory remote and add smart phone interface and several other features.
I went with the system offered by Accessoride.com for $179. Bought the kits for my 2016 4R and my wife's 2015 Lexus RX350.
I installed the 4R one yesterday and it really was quite simple once I got all the plastic dash parts off. They sure are a bit tricky but the instructions that came with the units were spot on.
These units work with the factory smart key just the same as the factory remote start does with one minor exception. The factory start process requires pushing the lock button 2 times and holding it down on the third push until it starts. The accessoride system is simply three momentary pushes of the lock button and no holding on the third push.
Once the vehicle is remote started opening the door does shut it off. As far as range goes I have no issue with this and my vehicle is in the driveway about 30 feet from my living room window and it works perfect from there. I just have to remember to set my heat and defrost before I get out so it is all running when I remote start in the morning. Also a good idea to remember to turn the wipers off so they don't try wiping on a frozen or snow covered windshield.
I don't yet know how long the engine will run after remote starting before it shuts down automatically but I would suspect at least 15 minutes which is good enough to warm things up for me.
I was quoted $495 to get the factory system installed by my dealer. Saving $320 and getting just about the same as the factory system does is a real bargain as far as I am concerned. The complete install took a little over an hour from start to finish and they also supply a hood pin switch that in my opinion is not necessary. It defeats the remote start if the hood is open if you want or feel that function is necessary but you don't have to add it if not. I checked my brother's 4R that came with factory remote and it does not have the hood pin defeat either.
