Butchering the existing gas pedal sounds like a horrible idea. Is the situation that urgent? If it were my vehicle, I'd wait for an actual replacement part to come out, and only then think about going to the dealer.
If the floor mats are really the problem, then removing the floor mats should be a good enough solution until the parts are available. And if there really is more to the problem than floor mats, then changing the gas pedal won't help one bit - at that point it's probably a computer at fault.

I think it's an electronic glitch, why don't Toyota admit it. Electronic accelerator is a different feel with my 07 4runner and my dad's 06 Tacoma doublecab long bed. Maybe it's just me.

Now... Has anyone experienced this with their 4Runner?!?!
I've had it happen twice in the almost 5 years of ownership. The first time, I was coming to a stop at a light and the engine suddenly revved very high. I quickly put it into park and it immediately went back to normal. The second time was when I started the truck one day and it super revved up again.
I currently have no plans to take it to a dealer considering the infrequent nature of this problem (and they still haven't fixed my 4Runners other problem).
Now... Has anyone experienced this with their 4Runner?!?!

:iagree: They've had a bunch of bumps and bruises (recalls) recently. Admitting it would be the ultimate black eye.
IMO:
The floormat causing unintended acceleration was Toyota trying down play it. Now they're saying it's the physical gas pedal relative to the floorpan and carpeting. I say it's the electronics and the drive by wire system. If this recall comes to fruition, it'll involve a lot more models and would be the recall that will bring down Toyota. Toyota is already suffering from its competition closing in on the reliability gap. I really do hope I'm WRONG.

Not with my 4Runner, nor Camry and Tacoma.
Thank you for sharing. I knew there were members here who had the unintended acceleration happen to them.

No, but I have had an electronic throttle control problem since day one. Anytime I'm holding the throttle partially open to control speed while engine braking against gravity, the truck will throttle back on its own and then resume the throttle position I had chosen. It does this every few seconds. Nearly impossibe to duplicate for a dealer because you need a fairly steep, long downhill on which to demonstrate it, and it feels fairly subtle in high range gears. It'll throw you against the seat belt in 1st-low though. I'm still hoping to figure out a way to show it to a dealer before my extended warranty is up.
