I feel like this could go either way. China is DEFINITELY subsidizing their economy with hidden funding and using that to undercut American business.
Then China is using their wealth to go in an buy the very same American companies that they just bankrupted.
All while at the same time doing everything they can as a state to steal IP from every US company.
1) STEAL TECHNOLOGY FROM WESTERN COUNTRIES
2) SUBSIDIZE CHINESE COMPANIES WITH $$$$, LOWERING COST OF CHINESE GOODS
3) CHINESE GOVERNMENT FUNDED BANKS PURCHASE WEAKENED US COMPANIES
This is a systematic 20-30 year attack on the entire US economy.
There are some solutions:
1) Ban the sale of any US incorporated company with a value of more than $25 million to any Chinese linked company or buyer
2) Take actions to protect CORE US industries.
Then China is using their wealth to go in an buy the very same American companies that they just bankrupted.
All while at the same time doing everything they can as a state to steal IP from every US company.

These tariffs are good for the US and jobs. Toyota is whining because it eats into their massive profit margin....too bad. They will use any excuse to raise prices and raise prices yearly anyways. The price of 4runners goes up yearly and nothing has changed. If Toyota built more factories here this wouldn't be an issue for them. Until then they are subject to any import tariffs the US imposes. Just like we are with any country in the world including Japan.

Hilarious anyone here thinks Mr. Trump is a republican. Yes he ran under the republican party but He is probably closer to a true democrat then anyone in recent memory. A true democrat not the Progressive weirdos that label themselves democrats these days. Again, these tariffs are good for America and American jobs. But I understand, since Mr. Trump can't do anything right in some peoples eyes we have to constantly be negative/angry and stay divided. Good sheeple.

I'm not an expert in economics, but won't the result of this be that it is more costly to manufacture in America?
I assume the reason America imports so much steel is that it is cheaper than producing locally. So it's going to make it more expensive for anyone using steel in America, whether they import or source within the country?

Economist here! Yes, tariffs result in everything becoming more expensive. It's a never ending battle that only creates higher prices and dead weight loss.The USA are heavily involved in Imports so it's going to double door action the consumer. Not to mention it will drive up prices on other related products as well.

Because of this, domestic producers are not forced to reduce their prices from increased competition, and domestic consumers are left paying higher prices as a result.We are a global economy! The incentive to bring factories to the USA will not help as American's demand higher wages. Thus driving up prices. Countries that the tariff directly effects will in turn impose tariffs on American exported goods. Not to mention our economy has shifted from the manufacturing sector to a more service and technology oriented economy. BOTTOM LINE THIS IS A NO WIN SITUATION.
Yeah just read an article that stated that in a $35000 car that uses about one ton of steel, the 25% tariff will raise the price of the car about $177. HOLY CRAP IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD! :madgrin:
Countries that the tariff directly effects have been imposing tariffs on American exported goods for years now so it's time for us to do the same and even the playing field. America is done being taken advantage of. BOTTOM LINE THIS IS A WIN SITUATION

As a fiscal conservative and someone who supported Trump I think these tariffs are a really bad idea.
Looking back at history you can see a similar type of tariff being passed before the Great Depression which I personally believe caused it. Here you go if you want to read more on this:

On tarrifs..basically, it helps people who make steel/aluminum and hurts people who use steel/aluminum. There's more people that use steel/aluminum than who make it, and so overall, it's detrimental.
As a bonus, it may also hurt US steel producers who export steel (or other things) if retaliatory tariffs spring up.
