Sorry let me clarify.
By lawyer up I meant if they decide to do nothing. I believe I mentioned that key part, I'll reread after I post. Of course he should leave that as a last option. Don't even mention a lawyer, until you see no resolution. Be respectable, and evaluate the options they offer, but know be a push over.. And what i meant by toyota engineer, I meant, maybe somewhere there is a spec that says, this engine can be ran for x amount of time without oil, with no ill effect etc etc. So after inspection if nothing is found, you can give answer with confidence that no damage was done. Maybe this is non existent. if i was in charge of the engine line, I'd make a spec for that. But that is just me...
my whole rant about not being qualified. I meant to say was, no one can say your engine is fine without actually looking. which they didn't seem to do for OP at the time of the first post. so I wouldn't be inclined to take an extended warranty without a full inspect of the car. Not sure about you, but I've heard pretty nasty stories around here on toyota service shops covering their own ass and lying out right to my dad. One case, it may have been a parking brake, the toyota rep shows him the old part to say the work was done. Since he did paid both sides, he said where is the other one. they said it was done and they didn't keep the part. He mentioned okay show me. They said they can't and the work was done. Dad was saying I don't believe you. etc etc etc... they finally backed up and saw the work wasn't done. One case, when my dad refused to pay for something that did not fix his problem, they essentially threatened him by putting two big guys behind him...No he didn't shout or scream, so it wasn't because he was acting up. He paid with his amex. then disputed it and won. So would I trust the toyota shop around here to saying my engine is okay after they forgot to put oil? Heck no. I'd like someone independent to verify it. I'm sure that is not the case in other areas.
In terms of investment. Yeah, I know it loses value, but to the owner, if he has to get another car or if he has to put money in a car at any point because of this, it is a loss of money. Never mind the value of the car.
my intent isn't to give bad advice, just to say, push for the option you want, and don't take the first option they throw at you (unless that is the one you want). Someone needs to clear the car and ensure there is no damage. not just offer you an extended warranty and get you out the door. Your fighting power decreases later on.
I hope this cleared up what I was trying to say.
In any case, OP have you gotten any updates?
