Toyota's computers are notoriously locked down....I find it hilarious that the #1 software mod is "turn seatbelt alarm off." Powerful program, that Techstream is.....

Received this stuff last week. Shipping took a while since it was form over seas.
Been installing and reinstalling. Not such a plug and play as expected. This is becoming annoying, i give up. This TIS needs more time and patience i don't have. I just want the windows to remote roll down and off the seat belt chime.

Got this to run on a 64-bit laptop with Vista (Home Premium edition) using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Things to note:
Had to find a copy of XP to load into the Virtual machine (it just creates an empty virtual PC that you need to load an O/S onto.)
Needed to install Java and Acrobat Reader to make it useful.
Unable to update XP because Virtual PC 2007 is not supported on Vista Home Premium (don't need to do this to make it run but I'll dig deeper into the Knowledge Base to find it.)
Last item is related to this:
USB is not enabled in Virtual PC 2007 and there is no option in the "top bar". The driver installed without an error but I don't have the USB active.
Help with any ideas on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks.

32 bit XP Home Edition SP2 on Virtual PC 2007.
The Virtual PC help function under Managing Connections states "Virtual PC (2007) does not support universal serial bus (USB) devices."
Is there any way or device to turn a COM port into a USB?
Or should I be looking for a different virtual PC program? The latest version for Windows 7 won't work with Vista.

The version that I remember downloading came with XP on it already. I'm assuming the difference is due to Windows 7/Vista.

Again it might be because the software is different for Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

There isn't complete USB support from what I understand after reading that comparison chart.

If Virtual PC won't work then I would just use VirtualBox or VMWare. If I remember correctly, both have free versions of virtualization software. Since you have an XP disc around this might be the best alternative for you.
I haven't used VMware, Virtualbox, Parallels myself, but those are the ones I hear quite a bit when talking about virtualization software. Good luck!

Suggestion........Get a cheap XP Pro laptop or netbook for running Techstream and keep it handy under your seat in your truck in case you are out and need it .IMO..It's in invaluable tool to have with you for troubleshooting any Toyota now that bootleg Techstream is out and so cheap.
My suggestion and what I use is a Dell D430 ultra-portable laptop Dell Latitude D430 Review and just keep it in my truck under the seat. A D420 also is about the same but a year older.You can pick one up for about $100-150 on ebay these days.These were Dell's top of the line small business laptops a few years ago selling for over a grand,came with XP Pro that Techstream is made to run with, are practically indestructible and light being they have a Magnesium alloy cover and case and a ZIF hard drive. ZIF hard drives are the same type used in a lot of Ipods and are shock proof and super reliable and the next best thing to a flash drive,which they make in the ZIF interface also.
It also is wireless , has 3 usb ports,firewire and a SD card slot to download your camera/video media.The DVDRW drives if you need one are separate though.I can just tether wireless from my phone and be online anywhere I have cell service and when my kids get in the first thing they fight for after who rides shotgun is determined of course.
I have refurbished and sold Dell laptops on the side for the past 10 years and have sold about 20-30 of these and they are super reliable and never come back for hardware problems.
Here's a couple of examples on ebay but there are plenty more.....or just do a search on there Dell D420 or D430.Just make sure you read what your getting and from a reliable seller.

^^^^ That's a really good idea. It would save the frustrations of getting these virtual machines running.
Also for anyone interested, the version of techstream I got back in August, I believe 7.10 works with the newer 2013 models as well. I'm not sure what the newest version is, or what benefits it offers compared to the one I purchased in the summer.

Yes, the older version for Vista doesn't have the USB top bar option. Your screen shot confirms it.
I'll try mapping the USB for fun but that is a long shot because the cable isn't a storage device.
I'll end up trying Virtualbox.

Thanks for the reply. I like your idea but this is already a spare (64-bit) but newer laptop. If I spend any money it will be to first upgrade it to Windows 7, but it looks like I would have to get the Pro version to make this work. I may end up with a Dell. It's all $$$.

Abandoned and removed the Microsoft Virtual PC 2007.
Success with the following:
Latest download from Oracle is VirtualBox 4.2.6 plus the extension pack to make the USB work. Loaded a guest 32-bit XP on a 64-bit Vista host.
You need to manually enable the cable on the USB device menu after plugging it in. It doesn't show up with an assigned computer drive letter in the Explorer window but it is working.
Able to use Techstream 7.20.041 to test the cable.
Thanks to all for your help. Now to find time to actually use it in the truck.

Got a chance to try it in the truck.
Everything works. Getting live data. Ran a Health Check with no issues or codes found.
Word of caution if you have a pre-CAN OBDII bus (I think prior to 2006 MY.)
DO NOT do a "DLC3 Cable Check", found under the Help section. This causes the utility to test the connection with the CAN protocol. This then leads to setting the VSC lights due to wiping out the yaw rate / deceleration sensor calibration. You will need to do the Zero Point Calibration fix found in TSB BR005-03 (search the forum for the write up.)
EDIT: Ignore the first part of the previous paragraph. Using this MVCI & Techstream to connect to an '04 wipes out the deceleration sensor calibration everytime. Always need to reset the Zero Point Calibration but it is very easy to do.
On the other hand, I now have a quick way to temporarily defeat the traction control if I am so inclined to do some drift experimenting, in a strictly contolled sort of way. Freedom to play in the snow!
(ps. Sorry to Jtraskell for the gargon.)

No button in '04 MY. (I know this thread is in the 5th Gen forum but this tool is not 5th Gen specific.)
But you are right that you don't need Techstream. You just need to short the Ts/CG, pins #4 & #14, on the connector (the first part of the Calibration routine.)
