Toytech Boss Questions before purchase

After making a long post asking for recommendations on coil over kits, I did my research and picked I don’t do high speed desert (TN living), so all these fancy coilover kits are overkill for me.

The want:
3” kit for the family overland rig
The use:
Camping with family, me and the wife do some camping just us and we get our off-roading done then. No rock crawling at all, nothing high speed just for outdoor fun. 50% camping 50% daily. Just got a new truck so this is the full camp rig other than when I just choose to drive it

Currently set up:
881/906 with 5100s set to 1.75”
With the new 285 addition it does run tight so would like to expand that with a bigger lift. All factory weight will add a front winch later for self recovery

Question:
What front spring do I need with the boss kit? 550? 600?

Any other suggestions?

Not sure if you know or not but the boss kit is an adjustable coil over as well, which is fine but I opted for the non adjustable. I had the boss kit on my 97 Tacoma and I personally prefer the 3” bilistien kit over the boss kit. If you dont garage your truck I would get the non adjustable IMO.

This is what I have and am happy with it, I have a winch and steel bumper.

If I got near 2 grand might as well buy the fancy icon is the way I look at it haha.

I was consideringthat same kit

Only downfall (lack of a better term) is just the non adjustable option.onky reason why I mentioned the boss kit was if I actually do add a front bumper layer on I have adjustments with the coil overs to offset the new bumper correct? I was looking at

For the adjustables you want to get the corresponding spring for the end weight of the vehicle, if you get a soft spring then install a steel bumper a couple months down the road and try to adjust the springs so the ride height stays the same you will get a really harsh ride. IMO if your getting the adjustables get the proper springs for what you plan on doing later down the road. So if you want a winch and steel bumper I’d go with the stiffer springs.

This is what I’ve gathered over the years of reading about coilovers and having them on my past Tacoma, they are not really for ride height adjustability. They are more for ride comfort/performance adjustability.

So with the other kit not adjustable how does that work with not having a bumper now but adding one in the future? Since I’m not seeing a spring rate to pick out

You kind of just get what you get, the previous owner had already installed this kit when I bought it so I don’t know exact lift numbers.. The eibach springs are 620lbs for reference. Right now my front is sitting 1” lower than the rear, I have steel bumpers front and rear, winch, and tire carrier (spare is not mounted right now though).. So Far I haven’t really noticed much difference since adding the bumpers.

Did you lose lift in the front when adding your bumper or did it handle the weight well and not lose any lift?

Let's clear up some confusion first.

Both the Toytec/Eibach kit(TTHA-9602) and the ToyTec/Bilstein kit(BK9602) are adjustable. Both front shocks are grooved to except a c-clip. That C-clip is what the spring perch rest on. The shock is usually set on the first c-clip setting when you receive them assembled from ToyTec.

I had the BK9602 and still think it's the best lift for the money you can get. I had it for about 6 months set on the first perch. That netted my stock rig about 2.5" of lift. I put on a plate bumper and winch. That settled me back down to 2" or so of lift. I removed the shocks and compressed the springs. Then I moved the c-clip up to the second groove and re-installed. I was now back at 2.5" of lift. The added weight and added pre-load made the ride almost the same as before.

If you go for a screw collar coilover you have finer, and easier, control over lifting. It can be done on the truck and in smaller increments. You also pay a lot more for the threaded shock body and collar.

Think about how many times you'll actually adjust them. Think about how long it would take you to pull a shock and move a c-clip. Then make a decision based on that.

I actually forgot to measure before/after the bumpers... oops.. But it looks the same as before.. I’m happy with it, drives great still. Do you store the truck inside or outside? If outside I would highly recommend going non adjustable. You really want to keep the threads on adjustables clean.

Edit: on their website they recommend not exceeding the lowest setting on the bk9602 just FYI.. maybe that’s just a disclaimer though so they can’t get sued lol..

Thank you for the help, I’m trying to get closer to 3” since my 881/5100 combo already has me at 2.25-2.5” give or take. Can we order the kit in the setting we choose? I’m ok with paying for convenience with the threaded boss kit, will I adjust it much? Only when I add my winch and bumper (if on bumper) in the future. I’d like to avoid stripping it all down to move a freakin c clip, yep it’s garaged and would stay clean after 12 years in the military I have a pet peeve for keeping things clean.

So it looks like with the help from you all I’ll be going with the boss kit. Easy adjustable with the threaded design for future mods. Rides the same from what I have gathered from everyone.

Cool. Now you have to figure out your spring rate. 650# will ride harsh now but will ride much better with the bumper/winch in the future. 600# will ride better now but you'll have to jack your pre-load way up to achieve that same ride height in the future.

FWIW, I went to Kings all around. I have 14" 650# springs. The ride on the street isn't mind blowing compared to my old 14" 620# Eibach/Billie combo. The ride off road on both rock and whoops is night and day. In my case a lot of that is the shock itself. It's just a much better component. My rig is also fully armored and weights just over 5000lbs.

Thank you for explaining that much better than My half baked attempts lol

Believe I’m just gonna stick to 600s, the bumper is a very long shot of me getting. If anything it will be a winch behind factory bumper
