Still waiting on my FN wheels to arrive but was looking at getting new tpms sensors for them as mine I'm sure are 13 years old. But, do you have to have sensors on your wheels? I feel like I can bypass this and just check my tire pressure every couple weeks or month and save a few hundred bucks. Is this allowed or frowned upon?

Haven't had TPMS in mine since a week or so after I bought it and the TPMS light came on. Do a search on here for the TPMs delete. It takes about 12 seconds and nobody will know any different.

Delete it. Such a ridiculous piece of new "technology". Just more sensors to go bad and more dash lights to have on. I guess it's helpful if you're an inattentive middle aged house wife, but that's as far as I can see it.

The tire shop may be required to ensure that the TPMS is functional, but maybe not. Just let them re-use the older ones when installing the new tires. If one fails down the road, make your decision then. I don't believe there are laws that require you to fix/replace failed sensors.

There's a thread on how to bypass the light. It's simple & easy. Did mine years ago and never looked back. The place I buy tires seems to have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy b/c they've never said anything.

[MENTION=554635]JBend[/MENTION], I should add that my tire dealer likely doesn't say anything b/c the light is never on. If it's on, they, like most others, won't work on the vehicle unless you buy new sensors b/c they can't let you leave with the light on, probably at least in part for liability reasons. I suspect some will test the sensors even if the light is off to try and sell you new ones but I haven't run into that myself.

I like having them... on a one of my cars I actually get the PSI readout displayed on the dash which is nice, wish the 4R could do that.
That said, I run two different sets of rims and tires and basically ignore it at this point because the light is always on.
It is nice getting off the trail after airing up and back on the road... if I had a slow leak/puncture you can generally catch it sooner than later. Helps prevent damage from driving on it for too long.

Since I went to load range E, I bypassed mine. My tire pressure is so different than what I would have stock they aren't really useful.
If I could set thresholds on the tires myself, I'd be more interested. But I use it so much offroad when I'm aired down I find it more of a pain than anything.

i replaced all of my tpms sensors earlier this year. the spare tire also has a sensor that gets monitored. the tpms id's are tied to the ecu on the 4th gen 4runner so if they can't clone the existing id's you will need to have them programmed with a scanner. this was my case as i had replaced my ecu due to some water damage, and my tires had some tpms-less valve stems from years ago so i was starting from scratch with the whole thing. the ecu had the tpms id's from the vehicle it came out of, and i purchased 5 new tpms valve stems with all new tpms id's.
the tire shop i went to didn't have a good enough scanner to do this, but the third shop i went to did. i did not require a trip to the dealer. this wasn't worth the trouble or expense and if i could go back i'd probably just do the bypass.

06+ T4Rs with an after market screen head unit, with idatalink maestro gives you live psi and tire temps. Denso sensor cost ~$40 each and last ~10 years.
Checking psi in the dark or during bad weather is a non-issue.
I find them as accurate as my Meiser dial gauges.
I send my kid outside with my TPMS scanner to check psi on all the vehicles, never needs to touch a valve cap or get in the vehicle. :juggle:

When I bought my 04 I thought it had tpms but it doesnt. o well. you wont miss it if you never had it

I will be installing a Kenwood headunit with the Maestro KO1 kit soon and having that data would be nice.
I like TMPS sensors since they tell me when I have a nail in my tires. I also love it for airing down and airing back up when wheeling.

What makes you think you don't have TPMS, I have never heard of a 4th Gen that didn't have it?
I have a 2004 and mine has TPMS.
Maybe a previous owner did the TPMS bypass, in which case your TPMS light will never come on.

Yup, mine too. 2004 with tpms. I disabled it.
A couple years ago i had a set of tires mounted on rims without tpms.
Shop said they could not install on car due to some liability issues.
Was putting them on myself so didnt care.
Mom just bought new rims, to put summer tire on, shop mounted tires on rims with tpms then didnt register the tpms so had a tire pressure on all summer. And they installed them on her car.
I can switch winter/summer out for her now, for free.
