TPMS life span and interchangability question

I have a 2014 4runner. I bought 4 2018 trail wheels and they had the tpms sensors from the 2018 included. I am going to get new tires for the trail wheels and I was hoping I could use the sensors that came from the 2018. Does anyone know if they will work? I think the Toyota part number is different.

Also how long do the stock tpms sensors work. I figured my 2014 sensors are at the end of their life and I would be wasting my time taking them off the stock rims to use them.

This is the correct TPMS for the 2018 4Runner and it doesn't look like it is backward compatible.

When I looked at the Tire Rack sight they list part number T3 for both a 2014 and a 2018. Can it be determined by a tire shop if the sensors will work before the tires are mounted? I hate to get the tires mounted with the 2018 sensors then have to remove the sensors. Would any of you reuse 7 year old sensors from my 2014? I really want to leave them on the stock 20" wheels and tires.
If I buy new sensors would you only use OEM? I plan to run this 4runner for several more years and then maybe get a 6th gen if they ever come out.

A tire shop may be able to help more than I can. I would probably not reuse the 7 year old sensors, expecting they are probably near end of life. I found a good deal on ebay for OEM sensors when I put TRD Offroad wheels on my 2018 Limited. Note: the OEM sensors as Pacific branded, like the one's tpms.com advertises. I think I paid about $30 each for 5.

you will not believe my 2005 4runner still have the original tpms sensor. 2 of them are showing low battery when i scanned it. it's been there for 15 years. it should last probably more than 5 years.

try to use the one for 2018 wheels. it should work. on your 2014 4runner, do you see each wheels tire pressure in the dash?

For what it's worth I replaced the original 4 out 5 TPMS on my 2005 Limited last year (2020). At 150K miles and 3 sets of new tires over the years I was amazed out how long the original OEM's lasted. I purchased my new sets of tires from Discount tire and each time asked them to check and advise if I needed new TPMS'. It wasn't until last year when I was getting the TPMS warning dash light and I knew air pressure was fine that I replaced the sensors before selling the 05.
