TPMS Rebuild with New Tires? How many of you have it done?

I did a search before posting - I wasn't able to get a good feel for how many of you have the TPMS rebuilt when putting new tires on the stock rims.

I'm going to get a set of Michelin LTX M/S2 at Discount Tire and they are pushing the rebuild at $7.50 per tire.

I realize $30 isn't that much money when you're spending almost a grand on tires - but that's money that can go towards an alignment or a few gallons of gas.

So.....how many of you would have or have had the rebuild done?

FWIW, I'm replacing my Dunflops at 40K, stock wheels, original owner.

I just got new tires put on and I did get the rebuild kit (new value stems and cores). I based my decision on this thread which you may have already seen (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/47674-new-valve-cores-necessary-w-new-tires.html).

Its cheap insurance. If your '07 has never had this done, the o-rings are 4years old. Unless I'm switching tires out right away, I have it done. Especially when getting new wheels.

When I recently bought my Michelins at Discount Tire, they were insisting that the TPMS kits were needed. I told them I never had a problem with the originals (still being used and on the 2 set of tires), but if they wanted them on, they could do it on their dime. They gave in and gave me the rebuild kits for 5 tires for free, saving me $40.

I would of probably bought them myself, but the salesman said that if I did not buy them, then he would put them on himself, cause they had more come-backs because of this problem. Since he screwed up by saying that, I said what I did. He put the TPMS kits on for free.

I would try to get them for free. You are dropping close to $1K in new tires; the least they can do is give you them for free. Give them a hard luck story, or tell them you giving them X amount of dollars for tires, see if you can get them for free.

I probably would of bought them anyways, if the salesman hadn't screwed up.

PS: Also check their online site, they have undisclosed coupons (if you do find them, print them out and take them to your sales person because they are not always aware of them as I found out). Saved me a few bucks.

Thanks for the tip. I stopped in (without the 4R) just to see what the pricing was. I've learned you can sometimes negotiate a better deal than what the website presents.

I'll see if I can knock them down a few more dollars (we were at $950 out the door - which was $56 less than the web price) without any extra coupons.

I'm hoping for the Michelin $70 off sale or rebate will come back soon since I just missed it....I'm about 30 days out from buying them....just have to save the last bit of cash.

Wait for the Michelin rebate; I also had to do that. Also do the rebate online; it's all done by Discount Tire. It's the second time around for me and they were spot on with time again - 30 days for a rebate.

Definitely watch their online site.

The tire guy at my local wholesale club told me there is a $70 off Michelin rebate coming up in a week or so. Since these things seem to be everywhere at the same time, I'd keep your eyes open. I'm also planning on getting a set of LTX M/S2s for my 4Runner when the next rebate comes out. Incidentally, for VA folks I'm talking about BJs Wholesale Club.

Honestly? It couldn't hurt to get new o-rings every now and then. Haven't seen them fail on a wheel yet, but I don't see why they couldn't.

You don't have rebuild or touch the TPMS.

When I replaced my tires, I actually did the work, you take out the core to let all the air out, replace the core, you break the bead (be careful not to touch the TPMS, take off the old tire, tire grease put on the new tire, air up the tire, balance, put the wheel back on the vehicle, Star-Pattern tighten then torque at 83lb/ft and enjoy the 4Runner like you did on the first day!!

Hey, do like dude that got them for free,,, cuz i did too and the certificates..DTD.. bought all the rebuild kits for me and one of the certs... for my tires... also damn 1k on tires.. ouch... i spent 800 flat with them..minus the rebate...lol...man what a great deal, just last week on a set of Bfg's kdw. for my t4r...but like stated before it doesnt hurt to do it...i have never done it n i have had the truck since 06....l posted the pic so you can see the wheel size that i bought my wheels for..they r 265/50/20

True, you don't HAVE to... but like someone else mentioned, that rubber grommet is keeping the air in your tires. Like any other rubber item, it will eventually dry out, crack, and leak. The rebuild kit at Discount Tire (www.tires.com) for the 4Runner should be 3.50/wheel, which is relatively inexpensive when you consider it's importance to keeping air in the tire, and the fact that that also includes the labor for someone to actually remove the sensor, replace the pieces, and put it back together again.

Can you go without replacing them? Sure, for a while. But how much is your time worth if you never replace them, the grommet eventually leaks, your tire goes flat, and the tire potentially has to be replaced?

I received COSTCO coupons in the mail yesterday and they included the Michelin $70 off coupons. Am I correct in assuming Discount will match the price?? Or they will have the same rebate?? I'd rather deal with discount since they are 3 miles down the road vs. 25 for Costco.

I chanced it when I switched over to the FJ wheels. I just had them swap the sensors over. I ended up having one with a slow leak, and had to take it back to have that one rebuilt.

If it's a manufacture's rebate then discount will also have it. Discount near me will match other prices even including discounts/specials (assuming it's not a manufacture discount you get directly from the manufacturer).

If you have some time to wait watch tire store websites for their current promotions, if you watch long enough you'll see manufacturers have rebates almost the same time every year and from what I've seen discount tire has discounts every few weeks. I just got Bridgestones from discount while Bridgestone had (in April) a $100 rebate and I combined it with discount tires "pay no taxes" weekend. This saved my another $75 since I got 5.

I just had mine done last Friday at Discount. I bought 4 Bridgestone Revo 2's, awesome tires by the way, and had them rebuild my TPMS as it was included in my cost and recommended when putting new tires on. I am getting a 100 rebate as well for catching the sale. It is an added security for a very minimal cost.

Resurrecting this thread.... i'm trying to determine if i need to do a rebuild kit. Given that my car is only 1k miles old and I'm replacing stock tires. I'm assuming it's not needed, is that correct? It's only if you've driven your car quite a bit. Right?

I'm assuming it's more based on the age of the TPMS units rather than the mileage. Those things might sit in a warehouse for a while prior to being installed but I'm guessing that a vehicle less than a year old should be fine to not get the rebuild kit.
