TPMS Sensors?

Sorry if it's a silly question, but what if I'm just putting on new wheels for year-round use? Can't I install the TPMS' from my current wheels in the new wheels without issue?

Short answer is yes. Just make sure the tire shop has worked with them before. These days most know what to do.
 
I'm putting on a new set of wheels and don't really want to bother with switching over the TPMS sensors onto the new wheels. My questions is, can I replace my spare with one of my stock LE wheels (w/ TPMS sensor) to keep the light off? Is 1 wheel enough to keep that light off or do all 4 sensors need to be present?
 
So as I just read this, after sleeping like Sh!t:sleepy:, I think I understand it to say the TPMS sensors only detect low air-pressure under 26.5lbs. So if I air up my Duratracs to 44lbs the sensors will be happy and content. Yes I went though the manual :rtfm: this morning before I attempted sleep and found nothing helpful.

Old thread I know...Just curious how you get the ID number of the existing TPMS sensor ? It seems the ATEQ TPM Quickset Tool requires it.

There is a piece of equipment to read the sensor ID wirelessly through the tire. Most shops will have it.

Yup. Toyota's TPMS system doesn't have a maximum psi threshold, just a minimum threshold. Supposedly some TPMS systems out there do, but I haven't come accross one yet, or noticed it.

LOL. When I took delivery of my Trail the tires were all 44 lbs. No light on. I kinda figured a dealer would know better.

Sometimes technicians are lazy and won't even check/set the tire pressure. I had a couple dealer trade-ins I was certifying for CPO and found the rubber body plugs and mini front mudflaps we're supposed to install during PDI just sitting in the glove box. SMH
 
I would really like to know if it is possible to bypass the tpms with some simple rewiring. I've been scouring the site for the last couple days and it doesn't seem like anyone has tried it on the 5th gen.

Before I get the "why are you so cheap, they are only $x" or any black tape comments the problem isn't money, it's availability. I keep a very strange schedule and it's tough enough to find time to change tires, oil etc. myself, often at odd hours at night. I don't want, or have time to go to a tire shop to get a piece of equipment reprogrammed that I don't trust to do what it is supposed to. The whole reason that tpms has become so prolific is the low profile tires that don't give the driver any indication it is going flat until it disintegrates, doubly so for run flat tires. 265 section tires on 17s are another story. As for the tape on the instrument cluster, I will not even justify that with a response.

I run a summer set and a winter set of wheels and tires, I just don't think it should be that complicated to change sets. If anyone has successfully bypassed the tpms light, or if there is a forum that describes how that would make my evening.
 
Has anyone tried to wipe all the sensors using techstream ?

Personally I think TPMS is a valuable system that has already saved me headaches if not my life at least twice.. It sure was nice to know my tire was going flat before I got on on a 70mph freeway a few years ago. I'm thinking of running 2 sets next year and wouldn't even think of bypassing but that's just mho.
 
I have a new 2016 4Runner Trail Premium and upgrading to TRD Pro 4Runner rims.

I'm planning on keeping my stock trail wheels/tires for long highway drives but 95% of the time, I'll be on the TRD wheels.

Question 1: Do you guys know what I'd need to include in terms of TPMS and valve stems? I'd like to go with a matte black valve stem to match the new wheels but can't seem to find exactly what would be needed. Any help here would be huge.

Asked the local guy at discount tire today and he said its possible to clone a set of winter tires using their $60 TPMS sensors. They can do it there apparently.

I can't make a new thread yet, so my appologies for disrupting this thread, I've searched but haven't had much luck as of yet ...

I own a 2017 SR5 4Runner with the stock alloys. There are TPMS installed on the rims and I am in the process of switching over to some aftermarket rims and tires.

Should I get new TPMS for the new setup? I don't want to as these TPMS have maybe 800 miles on them? But that would involve taking them out of the existing tire and rims and putting them into the new rims and tires. I have no idea what Costco would charge for that.

Also, it had been my experience in the past, when I had a new TPMS installed, that Costco couldn't 'read' my new TPMS, because their computer didn't go past 2014 for my Tacoma. In my Tacoma, I told them to use a 2015 Toyota Camry and that worked for the Tacoma had real time presure on the dash - that was nice.

Being brand new to the 4Runner, should I get new TPMS, let Costco install their generics, or do a switchout? I don't plan on keeping the OEM rims and tires and they may be easier to move if they're already inflated, balanced, and come with the TPMS.

If I come in with new TPMS, I'm almost positive they will not have the 2017 4Runner listed on the little computer thing, does anyone know what year,make,model would allow them to 'set' new TPMS if that's the chosen route?

And yes, I'm going to bro out with some KO2s on the FN rims.
 
Last week I had american tire put on a set of TPMS on my new rims and drove off the lot with the OEM wheels still on the 4runner with the new rims/tires were in the trunk. Once I got home I mounted the new rims and drove around without the TPMS light going off. I'm not sure what happened but I'm thinking there's two possibilities:

1) the tire guy cloned my oem tpms.
2) the ecu learned the new sensors themself.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so this will make swapping rims super easy.
 
What I do know is that with a new set of TPMS's they need to be programed as they are "Blank" for the lack of better words. Bought a new set of TPMS's for my wife's Maxima for new 19" Summer wheels and a new set for my daughters Subaru Legacy from Tire Rack and they had to be programed.
 
When I bought a 5th wheel/tire for a full-size spare, here's what I picked up:

TPMS Sensor

At $35 per, it's up to you to figure out whether or not it's worth it to buy new ones or get a shop to take out the old ones. I agree that you may be able to make up the difference in selling the mounted tires w/ sensors.

When I rotate, I use Techstream (bought off Ebay for like $20) to swap out the spare. In my opinion, Techstream is absolutely a worthwhile purchase since it lets you play with all the customizations as well.

Just one note - if you buy new sensors, WRITE DOWN THE SERIAL NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GET THEM MOUNTED. I failed in this regard, and had to track down a scanner to read it on the tire.
 
why do I really want them

Getting a second set of wheels/tires for seasonal use.

On the toyota (all of them as far as I can tell) you only get an idiot light that comes on and is possibly annoying (although I never saw it one time when I had a rock cut and slow leak). On my GM truck I get actual tire pressures - that is pretty handy.

Other than the light - and some possiblity of a "heads up stupid - you gotta flat" why do I want the TPMS sensors ?
