TR4 Trail Wheels Missing Inner Hub Cover

Sorry for the crazy title description, but it was the best way I could think to describe what appears to be missing on 2 of my 4 TR4 stock Trail wheels. The other day I removed the center caps to find 2 wheels with what appears to be an inner black cap and 2 without. I don't think this is normal and wanted to throw it out to the forum and see if anyone else has experienced this or might have an explaination. In the pictures, you can clearly see the difference. This would not really be an issue, but I had great plans to powder coat the wheels and run them without the external center cap.

Totally normal
You have no need to worry.

PS- if you need someone to take a center cap from you, I'm in the market

What you are describing is actually the grease cap on the front hub, it covers the front axle nut on the end of the cv shaft and protects the front wheel bearings. it is not part of the wheel itself

Thank you for the info! Sorry again form the misleading description - I just assumed those center caps would be on all 4 points of the trunk.

I'm glad I found this thread, because it's most relevant to my question.

The other day while getting my tires rotated, the dealer broke my center cap. Without any issues, they owed up to it, ordered me a new one (free of charge) and didn't charge me for the tire rotation. Awesome service, zero complaints. Shoutout to Diehl Toyota in Butler, PA!

In both of my previous vehicles (FJ and Tundy), I've had the same issues with the caps falling off/breaking. I hate the idea of eventually paying a stupid amount of money for a piece of plastic with a ring in it, which will inevitably break again. :frusty:

My question to to anyone reading this is, does anyone have a 5th gen, who runs without center caps on all four wheels? Will it do any harm in the long run?

My truck hardly ever sees off-road anymore, but when it does, it's just super light trails/dirt/gravel roads.

I ran without for well over a year. It won't hurt anything - some like the look other don't

The black grease caps will fade. The rear hubs will rust...more.
I've run mine without caps for over 6 years. I wirebrushed the rear hubs and painted with brush on Krylon enamel and they're still holding up. I've been planning to plasti-dip my rims for years but too damn lazy.

mwray8909 Do you have any close-ups of the wheel without the center caps? Did you do anything to your hubs (like paint) to keep them looking good (and rust free)?
