Traction aides off road

Considering inexpensive options for off road help in gaining traction in either mud or loose sand after getting stuck. I've used carpet strips, floor mats and foliage to put infront of and under stuck tires. Thinking that the thick rubber matting you would see on the floor behind bars (the kind with holes in it) would work very well, be cheap and be easy to transport/store. Looking for something re-purposed really as opposed to buying sand ladders/trax or similar.

What do you guys think or what other options should I consider?

I think the OP wants to make his own, vs. buying expo bling. FWIW, I've seen MaxTrax work very very well for traction and bridging and would consider them worth the expense. Those Treds are probably just as good.

If you need to DIY though, the restaurant spill mats might work well - they're about $40 on Amazon, grab one and go get stuck, see what happens . You could also consider making your own sand ladders with some really stout angle iron and some chain, if you know how to weld. Another option might be a couple sections of heavy expanded steel from the remnants pile at your local metal supply, tied together with cable or heavy rope?

Yeah, I figured as much but why reinvent the wheel when it sometimes costs you the same amount in time and materials to make your own. And that way if he really wants to DIY he has some proven designs to go off of.

Logs and rocks are pretty cheap lol. I probably stacked more stones during my heavy offroad time than the Incas or the Indian Moundbuilders. Rocks are the best because when they are not just laying around they are experts at:

Jack bases
Jack extenders
Vehicle stability control
Traction aids
Vehicle Ramps
Chairs
Ladders
Athletic skill games (skipping them)
Weapons
Pets
Shelters

And the best thing of all is you get to leave them behind and not get yelled at.

i've seen them do spectacular jobs at surrounding campfires as well.
