Traction in 4low?

Funny....during the Atlanta snowmaggedon last year, used my wife's mini cooper for a quick run to the store. When trying to get back into the garage (up little bit of a hill), it was very simply pointed out that the traction control does a great job of slowing the wheels to a nice smooth rpm pace in 1st about halfway up the hill.....but does diminish the speed I was requesting to make it up the hill. Walked out of the neighborhood to help push those in need. Not one person knew about disabling traction control. We were yelling at them to floor it (punch it chewy) to keep the momentum we provided them, and they were yelling back that the pedal was on the floor. So...tell everyone to find, and know how to disable traction control when needed except those smarter than the average bear.
 
I forgot to add, based only on the title,

I would say that neither 4H, or 4L with have more traction than the other by themselves, not accounting for any other systems ATRAC etc..

In 4L, the amount of additional torque that is available will often times make it EASIER to break traction, than when in 4H.

4L is used for low speed control.

Not sure that i agree with that. But then again, it has been a few years since i off-roaded. You cannot go fast in 4-LO due to gearing. And some gas pedals change their sensitivity when you go into 4LO...not sure about 4runners.
 
Gearing choice is really variable depending on conditions. I've found generally offroad that the lower the gears the closer you can approach the "threshold of movement" (crossover point between static and kinetic friction). I'm always jealous of Jeeps with a 4:1 transfer case. Especially in deep snow - low gears are critical. And I mean DEEP snow driving on top of 6' not 6". OTOH starting in 2nd gear on the street can work quite well to avoid crossing the threshold and spinning out. Maybe we need Mr. T to give us the 8 speed and we'd have everything we want with the super low 1st gear.

Thanks for the great info guys! Thai brings something up I have always questioned. In 2Hi or 4Hi, you can't just disable VSC. You can either only disable TRAC, via the TRAC button, or you can disable TRAC and VSC by being stopped, and pressing and holding the TRAC button for several seconds, to disable both.

Wouldn't there be situations where you would want to keep TRAC enabled, but disable VSC? I would think there would be times you would want TRAC enabled to control wheelspin, but VSC disabled so it doesn't cut engine power.

Hey, new to t4r but loving it so far. Trac is traction control, it's job is to prevent wheel spin. VSC is vehicle stability assist, its job is to deal with over and understeer keeping the vehicle pointed in the direction you are steering.

There are few situations where you want Trac without VSC. So much so that Honda's Ridgeline does not even have traction control. The main situation would be if you are cornering using oversteer techniques, but are in a vehicle that over spins the wheels too quickly for the driver to control. Think rally cars and you wouldn't be too far off. VSC would just kill all your momentum in these situations trying to stop the oversteer - no Scandinavian flick for you. But without proper control of how fast your driven wheels are spinning momentum would be killed anyway. It's a quirky situation, and probably not one you would come across in your Runner, but that is my understanding of it, hope that is helpful.
