Traded in the 07 Sport for a TE! Aaaand now some questions...

I got what I think was a great deal, so I went for it!

Love the truck. I'm a little pissed that they skimped on some stuff and reduced the usable storage space though.

So far I have noticed this, wonder if anyone else has- There is always a serious vibration through the handle of the transfer case shifter, and it even shakes sometimes. I can't hear it but I feel it when I put my hand on it. My Jeep never did this.

Also when in 4HI the truck noticeably handles differently- not worse per say, but I know its in 4WD. Its even more pronounced than my old 4Runner. Today while backing out of a spot, I had to really give it some gas for the truck to move (while in 4HI.) Is this normal? Should I be concerned? It was just plain old 4HI, no special settings.

i've felt mine vibrating too, never actually seen it shaking tho. and i notice it will move a bit when i hit the gas. my 2005 ram did the same tho, never any problems. i havent driven in 4H yet.

Yeah I actually see it in my peripheral vision once in a while, usually when accelerating. Glad to know its normal...

4HI in the TE is the functional equivelent of 4HI with center diff locked in the 4th gen. I wouldn't make a habit out of backing out of parking spots in 4WD. Fairly stressful on the drive train.

Really??? Holy crap. What do I put it in to get 4WD with the diffs unlocked? The manual makes it seem like its the same thing and perfectly fine to drive around with. They even reiterate that you should drive 10 miles per month in 4WD to keep everything lubed.

That function is only available in the LE.

As far as the 10 miles per month, something low traction (dirt, snow) is ideal but on pavement you can minimize stress by keeping sharp turns to a minimum. Highway is good for that. I'd keep the speed reasonable although that shouldn't be a problem for only ten minutes.

It's better than letting the 4WD components go unused.

You will not be stressing the drivetrain while in 4HI or 4LOW if you are on a "slippery" surface such as snow or dirt so do not worry about that. You just should not use a part time 4 wheel drivetrain in locked in 4 wheel drive when on paved surfaces that are dry or just simply wet with rain.

And remember the shift lever for the transfer case is coming directly out of the unit itself which is why you see it moving around while driving. The shifter for the transmission is a linkage setup and the lever is not bolted directly to that unit.

Hope you are enjoying your 5g TE. I'm not sure it's been clearly layed out here, but speaking from, ahem, experience--or, rather, the inexperience of a newbie--your having to hit the gas backing out was your engine working against the drive train in 4WD.

If you read the little slip on the driver's side visor, you will see the caution that the 4WD in the 5g SR5 and TE is not to be used on hard surfaces. There is no center diff in your new truck; that's the reason for the post that what you were doing was the equivalent of driving with the center diff locked. There's several threads here that you can find explaining this, and a lengthy discussion of how folks are handling the 10 miles/month recommendation. For example, more or less straight driving on the interstate if a dirt or gravel road is not handy.

I kind of figured that's why the transfer case lever was vibrating. Glad to know it's ok.

As far as the 4wd goes, I had no idea! I just figured it was the same as my 4th gen. I'll have to do a search and some reading now. Thanks again for all the input!

By all means, read up, but don't worry about it in the meantime (not that you are). Applying the simple rule; "use 4WD when you need it, turn it off when you don't", pretty much takes care of everything.
