I'm flexible. If you guys are up for Left Hand Canyon, I'd be game on that trail, too. I'm located in Northglenn, and that would be a local trail for me. My only concern: if the trail were to have snow on it, it would be sketchy in spots, especially if it looks anything like the old photos on Traildamage.com

I have an excellent view of the hills surrounding Boulder from my work, and would be glad to post a condition report.

I voted for China Wall... I've been wanting to check that place out. If we get a big group, that area might be good because it looks to have a lot of open space in areas. I think that it's all going to come down to weather... it is winter in the Rockies, after all!

Hey there, saw your post on the wheeling in Colorado thread, and I figured that you could answer a few questions about a CB radio purchase. I'm looking for something that is good quality, and a base unit that will fit in that upper compartment of the glove box in the 4th gen (just remembered that you don't have a 4th gen, so just disregard that).

First off, is there a brand that you recommend? Most people use cobra, thats all I know. Any other comments?

Hi Daron,

As far as the fitment in a 4th gen, sorry, I don't know about that. When it comes to brand names the vast majority of people end up with Cobra or Uniden. It's not a bad idea to try and get a common brand because when components go out such as a Mic or antenna then it's more likely that you can borrow one or will have one to lend.

You really don't have to worry about the quality of the CB if you stick with a brand such as Cobra, Uniden, or Midland. Even the most basic units in their line seem to work just fine. The technology is so old that they pretty much have the same guts in them.

You may want to find a unit with a PA speaker. It's nice to be able to flip a switch and use your CB to "yell" to someone out there instead of screaming out your window. It's also just a fun thing to have. You'll need to buy an external speaker if you want to use the PA feature.

Some CB radios come with a weather band which is nice but pretty much unused since we all have so many ways to get the weather forecast. I suppose that it would be nice if you are stranded out alone and have to hike out to get help but it's not really the best idea to be wheeling alone anyway. I have it but very rarely use it. I have to be pretty bored or I might tune in if I hear of a tornado that's happening or something. Not something I would miss though.

Gain control is something that I'm on the fence about. It allows you to boost or reduce the volume that everyone else hears from your radio. It's a nice feature but it's more of a fine tune option. More often than not it becomes a nuisance when the knob get's moved by accident so we can't hear or it get's too high and distorted. It is a good band aid if something in your system such as your mic or output is on the quiet side.

Getting your radio tuned and peaked is something that you can do after your radio is installed. It does give you more boost and you can transmit farther but you can't turn it down to the same level as everyone else's radio and it gets annoying. Normal radios are 4 watts output. If you tune and peak it you will be closer to 6 watts of output. When a tuned and peaked radio transmits it's loud and often causes distortion on the listening end. If people then turn their radios down the next guy to transmit is too quiet to hear. It also really doesn't help to be able to transmit further when you can't hear someone trying to transmit back to you. It also costs about $40 to get done.

If you really want range put that $40 towards a HAM radio. A regular CB will go about 1 mile under average conditions. A HAM radio ($130 for a basic unit) pushes out 65 watts and will go 20 - 30 miles. HAM radios can also access repeaters which take your signal and boost it to transmit across the country or even further.

that would be cool I have the same size mud terrain tires and size lift but different manufacture it will be fun to see the differences

This event will take place in and around the Woodland Park Area. This gathering of beautiful 4Runners and other off road vehicles will be open to anyone of any skill of driving. We will hopefully be driving and cooking over an open fire while on the trip.
