Trail wheels "better" than TRD Pro wheels?

How is the ride of your LE with the 17 inch OEM trail wheels?

After the switch, it took me a little while to get used to the 17s and winter rubber. Initially, the cornering was a little looser than what I was used to with the 20s and all-season tires.

After several weeks, I notice no appreciable difference in ride comfort. If anything, the 17s soak up the cracks and potholes in our local roads and streets better than the 20s. The winter rubber is also quite comfortable, and I only notice a slight hum at highway speeds. The Toyos have great traction on acceleration and braking.

I'm very happy with this set-up for my Limited.

I had the TRD pro wheels on my 3rd generation 4Runner. I finally decided to Install them on my fifth generation. Needless to say, they make all the difference. Driving and handling is so much better.

I’m probably a weirdo for doing this, but I actually like the looks of the ‘10-‘13 trail wheels, and put a set of those on my ‘15

No noticeable difference either way, I just like the way they look more. I also back dated my roof rack and have a ‘10-‘13 trail edition roof rail setup.

I have a 13 Trail, I picked it up with 79k this past Feb, just about to roll 92k.

I love it! When looking I actually had no interest in the pre-14's, but one day while searching cargurus I forgot to put in the year filter. This one popped up and never having actually seen one in person, I was intrigued.

The TE details just made such a big difference in appearance, I fell in love with it.

I did a bit of research, and found the early TE's had some pretty cool features, including the roof rack.

I actually had bought a set of PRO wheels during the sale, but was dragging my feet putting them on since I was waiting for a good tire sale. In the meantime I decided I liked the phone dial TE wheels better, so I sold the PRO's. (actually got 60 bucks more than I paid, a first ever for me, haha).

Anyway, long story short, yeah these early trail wheels are cool. Other than seeing them on the occasional FJ, they're pretty unique as I think these early Trails are somewhat rare. I believe they might be a tad lighter than the later trail wheels, but I may be wrong. I think they're 29lbs, vs 32lbs.

I'm thinking I may have them powdercoated at some point, but in no hurry.

I think they also look quite good on 80's, someone I follow on IG has an 80 with a set of them.

Would love to see that 80 with these early Trail wheels!

If someone looked at my runner they'd be confused since I have the '14+ front end (again, it's a '15), but from the side it looks like a '10-'13 given the wheels and rack, as stated. Fine by me - my own touch!

I like how you called them the "phone dial" wheels. I haven't thought of them that way, but now I absolutely see it.

Was very interested in the weight (I thought they may be lighter as well because there is one more "hole", but nothing scientific aside from that), so I like your comment. Would mean a weight savings of +/-12 lbs which would be great!

"Freedom Crawler" is the name of the Youtuber and IG account. He started off with a JK, went to a 5th gen Runner, and sold that and got a JKU Rubi and an 80 when he realized he was taking the 5th gen out over it's head on wheeling trips.

When I was a kid, I was into the musclecar scene. This was late 90's and pre- F&F, you either had a Mustang or F-Body. I had F-Bodies, but knew a fair bit about Stangs (know your enemy, haha). A lot of the various 80's Fox body Mustangs came with a wheel with a flat face and holes around the edge, and were referred to as "phone dials".

These FJ/early Trail wheels just automatically reminded me of the Mustang wheels, haha.

i have a 19' TRD ORP and looking to get 285/70/17 nitto ridge grapplers for the stock wheels; do i need wheel spacers to accommodate the tire size on a King Shock lift with TC uca?

I still like the look of the trail rims as well.

Used to have them plastidipped black and I actually just plastidipped them Bronze Gold a couple days ago. Not sure I am too sold on the Bronze Gold yet though. It's a little too gold for my taste but it's growing on me. At distance they appear a bit darker, but up close I feel like they are bit more on the gold & brighter side.

I did just buy the Brass Monkey plastidip as well and it's on the way nest week I believe. It should be a bit darker and more bronze as well or atleast thats what I am hoping for. Definitely can post up photos of that when it comes in next week though if anyone else is interested once I get it finished up.

did you have a run wheels spacers for this setup? I plan on doing the same with mine until i can decide on what aftermarket wheels i want.

I researched the 4runner that I am picking up on Wed, can't wait btw, for over a year. In that year or more I went back and forth between the black and grey TRD wheel as my favorite and then the week or 2 before buying I finally thought to myself the standard Off Road rim looks the best. So it grew on me and just in time. Kinda crazy.

Doubt it, I am running a Goodyear MT/R 285/70/17 and they are 11.5" inches wide, same as the Nitto and there is plenty of room between the tire and the UCA. I have a Fox shock with resi's, no contact there either. Of course YMMV all these trucks seem to be a little bit different in regards to wheel clearance, depending on alignment settings/ect.

Realized I never got back to you on this or saw that you quoted my reply. I do not have wheel spacers on my setup. Just bone stock there with a lift all the way around and with the rear spacers to level out how I wanted it.

Wheel selection to avoid rubbing on 275s

I'm currently on the stockish appearance, sleeper look kind of thing with tasteful mods. I like my Trail wheels the more I look at them, and are a "big part of the formula" as a friend put it for not having rubbing issues.

Coming out of Tacoma ownership for 8 years, the trends where everything was debadge, plastic dip, black wheels, and satoshi this and that- I got pretty burned out on that look. I'm sticking with my Trail wheels for a while.

GLANDNUT, I am thinking of going to 275/70 tires on my 2019 SR5, stock wheels, which are 17x7, 15 mm offset. I've read a lot about rubbing issues, but not sure what the final answer is on how to avoid.

When you quoted your friend about wheels and rubbing, what did you mean? For any particular tire size, the only thing that determines how the tire sits in the wheel well is offset. Rim width is irrelevant if the offset is the same.

What is your conclusion about best offset? More negative offset brings the wheel out and makes more space at the inner aspect of the well where it might rub against suspension or mount, but it also increase scrub radius which increases the likelihood of rubbing front-back along fenders/liners.

On the other hand, more positive offset keeps the wheel further inward, which might crowd the inner aspect of the well more, but the decreased scrub radius will make it less likely to have a front-back fender rub.

What are you running on now?

I haven't done much with my truck for many months, but I was mostly referring to the offset of Trail wheels versus the offset of the TRD Pro wheels. In general, with lift and larger tires, the Trail wheel offset tends to be less problematic and/or will have less scrubbing due to the offset. My comment was specifically directed towards Trail wheels versus TRD Pro wheels. Go check out the build on 4Runners.com under Dark Knight. Jeff eludes to the benefits between the 2 there, but not specifically to SR5 wheels.
