Trailer wiring routing

When I got my truck the plug for the trailer came from under my truck and was attached next to the hitch. After it stopped working I tore it out and had to install another one but can’t figure out where it comes through to go under the truck. I’m sick of having to lift the tailgate to hook it up. Can anyone tell me where the hole or access is ?

Depends on the year of vehicle, 01,02 comes out at vent behind left bumper wing. 96 came out of floor plug left corner, don't know about others.

there is a hole under the carpet in rear cargo area under the carpet with a rubber grommet.

You can see the wiring go through the square plastic plug that is below the plastic door trim in this pic (in the shadow, bottom left):

It can either go down on the left or right side, depending on how your new trailer harness plugs in. From there, the harness goes towards the center of the truck and down through a hole to the outside of the body.

On my Hopkins aftermarket trailer harness kit, the control box needed to be stashed away in the right side behind the tail light. The actual trailer plug got the harness terminal end fished up from under the right side of the floor body brace, there's an oval shaped open hole under there. Then I had to make a small opening in the rubber square plug that you find under the carpet. The harness terminal got pushed up through that and plugged into the actual control unit.
