Tranny Dipstick Broke Off

My transmission dipstick broke off in the fill tube today. About 15" down is where it broke. Luckily I was was just topping it off so I have some idea how much fluid I needed to add. It seemed to be fairly wedged in there.

A. Does anyone have any ideas how to retrieve it from the topside?
B. If I drop the pan, will I be able to reach up there to where the fill tube comes into the side of the tranny? Then I could just push it down from the top with a long poker of sorts.

There is a 10mm bolt that holds the fill tube at the top to the engine block. Remove the bolt and the fill tube should come apart about halfway down with no fluid coming out. Try to remove the dipstick with some needle nose pliers. If not, drop the pan.

I don't think one of those telescoping magnet things would pull a stuck tranny dipstick out. For some reason these dipsticks don't want to go back in as easy as other dipsticks I've had on previous trucks/cars.

I think your only option is as LittleCaesar suggested. That tube does have a joint in it.

Agreed, mine can be very difficult to insert and remove, requiring much wriggling and twisting. Talking 'bout my dipstick.

I pulled the top half of the tube as suggested and there the other half was sticking out just barely above the seam. Thanks to LittleCaesar, I probably wouldn't have seen the seam in there before I dropped the pan. It came right out without even having to pull hard. Now I just need to find a source for a replacement dipstick.

Sorry I couldnt resist. it 's not funny that you are having problems with your truck. I hope you get it out ok and easily.

I cut it off just below the cool mark on the dip stick. This so far has worked excellent

the 4runner trans dipstick is the most annoying of any vehicle I've owned, i feel like it's got to make it through teh windows tubes screen saver or something to reach it's final destination....

i may go by the junk yard and pick up a spare dipstick and trim it and try this out.....
