Tranny whine - how long do I have

96 sr5, 4x4 with a340f. Had all the shift sensors replaced 2.5 years ago with oem parts. Started making noise this week. Changed the filter and fluid and it looked fine.

So how long do these usually last after they start to whine. Noise is from the tranny and not the alternator, power steering or AC idler bearing.

If it's the pump it could give out at any time. If it's the torque converter it could go another year before giving out. My torque converter has been whining for 6k miles. I'll continue to drive it until it either fails or I come up with a replacement tranny. I want to get the most out of it before replacing it or rebuilding it since it behaves perfectly, just makes noise.

It only whines while in gear. I just drove 60 miles one way with no issues, just noise. I will take it to a couple tranny shops tomorrow to check on the cost to rebuild and go by Toyota to see what they want for a tranny. $1880 is he lowest price I've seen online for one.

My transmission was rebuilt at Cottman Trans at 150k miles by the previous owner.

Now at 232k miles it has given out, and I'm replacing with a used transmission from a yard.

Damn, that's not very long at all. Thaeres no decent yards around here to get a used one from. I'd have to goto St. Louis or Chicago

Sounds more like the torque converter. That's what mine is doing.

I'm envious of that price. The shops around here are ridiculous. The lowest I could find is $2800 rebuilt with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty. I've heard of the rebuilds not lasting long though. I'm considering swapping a used one.

That price is just for a toyota tranny and they want 1k for a core charge. I'm going by a couple of places tomorrow just so they can better diagnose it for me. So, basically 2k plus labor for a new one vs having it rebuilt

I'm gonna check my local dealer then and see what they say. If I'm gonna spend almost 3k I'd rather it be at the dealer.

3k is a tough pill to swallow for tranny. it's like buying another 3rd gen.

For $2300 plus core you can get a new transmission from camelback Toyota.

Oh trust me, I agree. Unfortunately I live in the armpit of Oregon. I don't have the time to do it myself anymore and I've called the shops around here but they won't swap a used one in. (Why, when you can charge 3k for a rebuilt one? It sucks for me but it's a good business model)
I'm essentially paying for the convenience of not having to worry about it. I haven't 100% settled on the idea s I'm open to more options should they appear.

I am having the same issue and dilemma as you

I've also got a whine in the transmission that's really bad and it certainly is showing its age. It's hard to find any low-mileage 3rds gen parts around where I live. You don't even see many of them on the road around here.

I've decided to bite the bullet and have them take it apart and rebuild what they need to rebuild. It's gonna be around 3k for mine as well. But at least I know that they can actually fix the problem instead of just sticking an old transmission in it that could shit the bed two years from now. For me the peace of mind was worth it. Plus the fact that it will drive like a new truck is really appealing. But the price sure is hard to swallow since that's pretty much what I paid for the truck!

I feel you. Geography is often a limiting factor in our options.

Only should up when I was out on the Mohave rd. Not a place I wanted to be at and have problems

This sounds like a bad water pump. I had a whine for about a year that was fixed with a water pump replacement.

Your torque converter is slipping so your transmission has to work harder to achieve the same task, hence the overheating. However that's based on the assumption that the whine is indeed coming from your transmission. Have you ruled out other possibilities like a water pump mentioned above?
