Trans cooler mounting question

I have read from various posts that the best way to mount the cooler is with the input/output ports on the side with the top being "in".

However, due to the size of my cooler I cannot mount it this way.

So, my question is would it be better to mount the cooler with lines going in from the top of the cooler or going in the bottom?

If you can't put the ports facing sideways I would put them facing up.

I have the same one and was able to mount it sideways. On the passenger, it can be tight but I attached the top hose before attaching the cooler, made it easier.

It doesnt really matter which way you mount it, you can mount it diagonal if you want. The fluid is being pumped through from the tranny, as long as airflow goes over the cooler its getting the job done. I mounted mine more on the drivers side with fittings facing down, much easier to install in my opinion!

I did a bit of research on this in a thread over on yotatech, and what I found is that the "ideal" way is to run the ports facing up, a close second is to run them ports to the side, with the inlet on the bottom, outlet on the top (so the cooler fills from the bottom), and worst is ports facing down. The reason for this is that ports up and sideways-filling-filling-from-the-bottom allows the cooler to completely fill up with fluid (no trapped air), thus allowing maximum cooler efficiency (most heat transfer area, most fluid flow cross section)

That said, I did find that alot of other vehicle guides showed coolers being mounted ports facing down. If you think about it, this will cause alot of air to get trapped in the cooler without a way to escape.

B&M suggests the order I described above (that's where I got it from). It wasn't in the literature that came with my cooler, but I found it on their website.

Again, the fluid is being pumped through the cooler, after a few minutes any air trapped will come out. Fit it and install it whichever way is easiest, the fewer sharp turns and 90 degree elbows the better. That being said, look at the location of the fittings for your cooler thats part of the rad...... they are both on the bottom. Our heavy duty coolers we mount on Zambonis are all bottom facing fittings, they work just the same with the same tranny fluid. Installation is usually neater that way.
