Trans dip stick

Ok so because its so easy to get in and out of the tube to check the fluid amount my dip stick is all bent out of shape. So i ordered a new one and the new one is part #35103-34060 but it is shorter than the one that came in my T4R. So does anyone know if there is more than one dipstick that fits a 2000 T4R SR5 3.4 4X4? Maybe someone works at a dealership because the one I got it from is saying that the new one is the right one but if thats true im a few quarts low and have been then for a long time????:peep:

Your rig could have been an early '00 model. I read on here that in '00, they did start putting a shorter dipstick than in previous years' models.

It's probably the same part number for all years (I just checked for my '97 and it is in fact the same part numebr), the part itself was probably updated.

I don't know if that is true. The dipstick on my 00' sucks to get in and out. Seems to have too many curves in it.
 
Your dipstick has curves in it or are you talking about the filler tube?

My trans dipstick is straight.

Besides, we're just talking about the length of the dipstick here. If I recall, the dipstick I have on my '97 is way longer than it needs to be (where the "hot" indicator is around 1/3 of the way up on the stick. Toyota might have redesigned it to be shorter in an attempt to make it easier to work.. I don't think the length ended up mattering.

Personally, I don't have much of an issue with checking the trans fluid level. The dipstick doesn't slide in and out like you're dipping into butter, but I just push it in until it snags at a bend, twist & jiggle slightly to push it in a little further until it snags again and repeat until it's all the way in. I think there are only 2 major bends that give it a hang up though.
 
Yep, my trans dipstick is a pain in the A to get back in. For the new dipstick, check the markings on it. It might be shorter, but the cold\hot full lines might matchup. Don't quote me on this, but if you check from the lid\handle of the dipstick to the marks do they match from the old to the new?

I checked and I will post a picture later but the marks are no where near being in the same spot with the tops of the stick with the handles even the marks don't even come close.
 
Let's face it, we all have mangled dipsticks.

My mechanic had some time on his hands so he bent it back into place so it'd work again. When I pulled it out inspecting the 4Runner I literally could not get it back in. Took me like 10 minutes.
 
You guys are doing it wrong. If you feel resistance when putting the dipstick back then pull it back out and rotate it 90 degrees. Keep doing that until it goes in correctly. I haven't damaged my transmission dipstick in 15 years doing this. It's hard to post in dipstick threads without typing something that sounds dirty.

Yeah, i do the rotate thing and it works but its not easy...

I have the same issue with posts about tranny fluid...sounds gross...or tranny problems...sounds too Jerry Springer...or need a new tranny...nevermind...
 
I'd take that back to the dealer and show them the issue. They might be able to find one that is the correct length (often with Toyotas parts are interchangeable between models).
 
just found this thread.
my new to me 4runner dipstick is a pain in the butt to put back in. Im in my 60's so Ive had a few years practice.
I wonder if the shorter dipstick goes with a shorter tube as an update as well ?
 
so I went to dealer yesterday and indeed in early 2000 they did do a dipstick and tube change. They are shorter in the late ones, wonder if they fixed the issue of being a pain to put in
the parts guy said that one thing is to straighten the very tip, they often get bent making them hard to insert
I tried that , did not help

the first place it hangs up is the mid section in the tube. the tube has a splice and oring
the second place is right at the bottom where the tube takes a near 90 degree bend

new, for my year and mine is the early ( 01/00) is 22 bucks
didn't buy one as I don't think that's the issue, but the tube design

Id like to revive this post as I am running into this issue myself and so ive seen.... the answer never really was reched from what it looks like....

I have a 2000 SR5 V6, and the trans dipstick broke in the tube....

Boo, shitty.... but i managed to separate the filler and snag it, and I too went to the dealer and got a new Dipstick.... Part# 35103-34060

It seems tho, that the new one, (like ARNEZIE posted earlier) is shorter in length, the notches are much closer together (hot/cold marks) and its making my trans appear as tho it way over filled, when its not....

Unfortunately I dont have my original stick as it was in 2 pieces and got tossed, therefore I cant measure the notch distances or overall length. But the situation is just like ARNEZIEs pics show....


Any help? anyone know if theres another part number that matches the old dipstick parameters? Any info atall? I saw someone was touching on different ones for earlier or later in the 2000 year? anything.... thanks guys
