Thread Revival.
To answer those prior questions. There are 3 differences in the transmissions produced for the 4x4 models.
Differences:
1. Fed vs Cali. - Cali uses different dipstick to manuever around the exhaust and such. Toyota dealer ordered me a new dipstick due to leak; we found out that the federal dipstick will not fit a cali model. IN OTHER WORDS SWAP THE DIPSTICK.
2. Kick Down Transmissions vs electrically controlled - The 1996 - 2000 4x4 transmissions have a kickdown throttle cable. 2001-2002 has no kick down cable. ANY 4x4 transmission from 96-2000 will fit a 96-2000 4x4 4runner.
3. Internal Differences - The 96-2000 transmissions have various different valving and pump models, HOWEVER, the physical dimensions, input and output shaft dimensions ARE ALL THE SAME.
So what matters? Just the dipstick. 96-2000 4x4 transmissions fit 96-2000 4x4 4runners, you will just have to swap dipsticks if cali model vs fed model.
Now obviously you CANNOT (at least easily) swap in 2001-2002 transmissions these are cpu controlled and just no. Now though the 96-2000 has different valving and pump, have to remember these cars arent "smart" they dont give a shit what you hook them up too. The transmission is reading RPM, throttle position, and load to figure out what gear and pressure to run. In other words it is its own system seperate from "the car".
