Trans service, is it possible?

Where do you refill the transmission from?

On the 5-speed transmission (A750):

It fills like a differential / t-case. There's a fill port high up on the side and a drain port on the bottom. If you're going to take the dive, don't forget to loosen the fill port first; in-case it's seized on there.

There's a specific procedure for getting the transmission to the correct temperature to ensure it's correctly filled. I know there's plenty of threads that detail the procedure.

The 4-speed on the early V6's still had the dipstick. And the method (atleast on the 3rd gens with that trans) was to fill it with the dipstick tube. What a pain in the ass.

To be honest, unless you're in a real bind about the $$$, it is one of those things that's worth it to take to a reputable dealer. While the margin of error is wider on the 4-speed A340, if the fill level isn't perfect on either of the transmissions, they shift like hot garbage and drive like a dumpster.

Bossman, there's a field day for you here if you want it. ;-)

Richrd, just about any maintenance you ever wish to do, including the transmission, is listed here in a "sticky" thread at the top of the 4th Gen section.

Most all of the topics on replacing the AT fluid or drain and fill, flushing etc. will tell you where the fill plug is...but just so it's mentioned here, it's on the right/passenger's side of the transmission of the 5 speed "sealed" transmission with the exception of the 2003 version of the 5 speed "non-sealed" transmission which has a dip stick and uses the older AT fluid that the 4 speed uses, type IV.

Also on the drain and check fluid level plugs on the pan, the drain plug is flush on the pan, the check level plug is the recessed plug.
