Trans Temp Hit 208 degrees today

According to my ScanGuage my trans temperature hit 208 degrees today while climbing in the Appalachian mts. The indicated outside temperature was 104 degrees on the dash. I have an auxiliary trans cooler and the temps would pretty quickly drop back down. I just thought this would be interesting info for ppl that are not running a scanguage. I bet the temps would have been a lot higher without the cooler.

Coming through the Rockies this week I found my trans temps around the 230s pulling my trailer. Scary to think how high the fluid was getting hauling that around. The ScanGauge is a must, IMO, for anyone towing a trailer. Same price as a trans temp gauge, way more features.

Do you notice that in 4th it will open the tq converter and the temps drop in a few seconds?

This guy does a good explanation of locking and unlocking of the torque converter.

If the tc is locked, there is no slipping which reduces heat generation considerably.

It can only lock in 4th and 5th gear.

Ya I have read and posted in that thread :)

Brockeverly,

Did you hard mount your scan gauge? If so, do me a flavor and post some pics.

Thanks!!

I did. I will see if I have a photo, if not I will take one shortly.

The fluid temperature and how it is affected by the transmission locking/unlocking is very interesting in the above linked thread.

For the 5th gen, Quentin has posted information to the effect that lockup can also occur in 3rd gear. I'd be interested in hearing from 5th gen ScanGuage owners about temperature behavior in 3rd gear that might shed light on that info.

Any issues with the scanguageII draining the battery? Read some reviews about that....and not being too accurate....they were in the minority thought....just wondering on the 5th.

Ram, I have not noticed any batt drain.

Brock, yes now that you mention it, I recall the temp dropping when it downshifted into 4th and prob when the TQ locked up.

Towed with the 4Runner for the first time and started looking into ways to keep the torque converter locked after seeing the temps get up to 209 deg while going pretty easy on it.

The document Quentin linked states that flex lock-up is used in 3rd gear when in D. Flex lock-up isn't used when in S3. Flex lock-up is a partial lockup, so you'll still see elevated temperature when compared to full lock-up in 4th and 5th.

Thanks. Good info is worth waiting for.

ugh.. i should have used that code while it lasted... anybody know of any other codes besides the DCM3 thats up on a banner on their site? i'm ready to buy one

Be patient. Advance Auto has codes like this available all the time.

In fact, here is a 30% off code:

Not as good as the above (40% off) but still better than 0%.
