That's the transfer case for 2nd gen 4Runner's.

VF2A is the standard j shift transfer case. VF3AM is the multimode transfer case. There are a few different versions of the VF3AM: 96-98 Limited, 99-00 Limited, and all 01-02 4Runner's.

The VF2A was only used on 4 cylinder 4runners if I'm not mistaken.

VF2A is the standard j-shift transfer case. It can be found behind 4 cyl and 6 cyl engines/automatic or manual transmissions.

According to my 2000 FSM there is only sections for VF2A and VF3AM. Considering 4cyl/manual/4wd was still an option in 2000 I'm going to say you have a VF2A transfer case.

EDIT: I don't have a j-shift transfer case to verify this, but I'm pretty sure VF2A transfer case is a forward shift. Can someone with a 1996-2000 4wd 4Runner verify this?

[MENTION=633155]cl4Rk[/MENTION] Very helpful! Thanks for the photos. I'm going to say that it's a top shift transfer case. I believe a forward shift transfer case would utilize the shifter points that are blocked by the plate directly in front of the current transfer case shifter points.

The reason I said vf1a is because 1st Gen 4cyl Tacoma's with w59 transmission were mated with vf1a. But then again 4runners were Japan made and Tacoma's were made here in California so it could be different. Even though the powertrain in 1st Gen tacos and 3rd Gen t4r's was fairly identical.

Don't forget the VF3AM transfer case equipped on multi-mode 4wd from 99-02 models. The difference between this and the VF2A is that the VF3AM has a center diff and therefore can be driven safely on road in AWD.

The VF3AM transfer case was already mentioned earlier in the thread, but never came factory behind a manual transmission.

There is also 2 different versions of this transfer case.
99-00 used a j-shift shift pattern with a push button on the shifter for 4hi. With this version the 2hi/4hi/4hi locked are controlled by the shift lever closing/opening different switches that tell the 4wd computer what selection you are in and it actuates the front diff actuator and transfer case actuator. The shift lever physically changes the high/neutral/low shift lever in the transfer case.
01-02 uses a button on the dash for 4hi locked and another button for 2wd/4wd selection. The transfer case shift lever is a straight forward/back pattern for high/neutral/low.

EDIT: I'm not sure if the transfer cases in 96-98 were classified as a VF3AM. They were electronically actuated, but did not have a center differential for 4hi(awd).

The VF1a NEVER came stock behind a Tacoma, 4 or 6 cyl.
